Tigers get rousing kickoff for second round
The Corsicana Tigers got a big send-off Thursday at Tiger Field in preparation for Friday’s playoff game against the Marshall Mavericks in Tyler.
Following a fund-raising tailgate supper, the band, cheerleaders, football players and hundreds of their supporters cheered, laughed and sang for victory in the parking lot outside the stadium.
“In Texas, Corsicana football is known throughout the state,” said Phil Castles, head coach. “I’m super-proud of this team.”
Castles said it’s a humbling experience to be part of the great tradition of Corsicana football returning to the playoffs.
For Tavia McHenry, who circled the crowd taking photos and cheering, Thursday’s pep rally was even better than last week’s successful send-off.
“This one’s way better,” she said. “It’s got more energy.”
The rally included some short speeches, and a blind-folded game with some of the starting line-up, but perhaps the biggest laughs came when two players decided to give their own speeches.
“We just want everybody to come out and support us tomorrow night,” said Kyrie Piper, adding, “As we whup up on some Mavericks.”
The game against Marshall will take place in Tyler at Rose Stadium.
