Corsicana-ex Thomas gets the win as Texas rallies in 9th

Longhorns to face TCU in super regional

AUSTIN (AP) — Preston Clark hit a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning as Texas rallied from a four-run deficit to stun Army 14-10 and advance to the super regionals Sunday night.

Less than 24 hours after beating Boston College in 25 innings in the longest game in NCAA history, the Longhorns (44-13-1) were at it again with an eight-run ninth, making a winner of Corsicana's Stayton Thomas (4-0), who didn't allow a run in 1 1/3 innings and got a key double play.

"Those are the kinds of magical things that I talk about and you all laugh to others about," Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "But it's the truth, there's something spiritual about baseball you don't mess with it.

"Did one (game) lead to the other? I don't know. Is this the kind of experience that allows players to trust in themselves and reach that level of invincibility that allows them to win a national championship? The answer is yes."

Trailing 10-6, the Longhorns loaded the bases three times against Army (36-21) during the inning.

The second time, Brandon Loy almost ended the game when he bounced a three-run double off the top of the left-field wall just inches away from going over for the win.

Texas led off the inning with a walk and two singles before David Hernandez drove in Kevin Keyes with a fielder's choice groundout to first base. Travis Tucker, who had the winning hit in the Longhorns' 3-2 win over Boston College, walked to load the bases again and Loy tied the game.

Army reliever Kevin McKague, who earned his seventh save in the Black Knights' win over Boston College a few hours earlier, walked two batters before Clark came up.

"I'm still in shock. I can't express the feelings that go along with that," said Clark, who was 2 for 6 with five RBIs.

Army's Andy Ernesto hit three singles in his first three at-bats.

Texas starter Taylor Jungmann struggled in his first playoff outing, giving up six runs in 3 1-3 innings.

The Longhorns will host TCU next weekend in the super regionals, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
