Okay, the college football season is over. What do we now know about it by way of the BcS bowl system?
We know that Alabama was better than Texas is without Colt McCoy. Hey, injuries happen and there is no asterisk to show that an All American only played five plays.
We know that Florida was better than Cincinnati is without a coach. They may have been better anyway, but we’ll never know.
We know that Boise State was better than TCU was on that given night.
That’s how sports are. The team that is better on any given night gets the championship. That’s why they play the games instead of using computers. The game isn’t on paper. It’s on the field.
What don’t we know? Could Alabama beat Boise State? Maybe, maybe not. We will never know, will we? Both teams finished the season undefeated. Both teams did everything that they were asked to do during the season and finished with unblemished records.
People can speculate or even argue about whether the Frogs could have beaten the ‘Horns, or how either would have fared against Tim Tebow and the Gators. None of that matters. All that would do is figure out how to determine third in the polls through fifth.
Who cares?
I read somewhere that President Obama wants a college playoff system.
Well, perhaps he can influence that. I know that at the moment he has more to work on. There are the economy, unemployment and radical Islamic terrorists with explosives in their BVDs. In his spare time he’s dealing with running banks, GM, AIG, Chrysler and health insurance companies. He also has to worry about global warming (or is it cooling?).
However, I think he might be able to influence college football with very little time away from his day job.
Do you remember the uproar in 1969 when President Nixon crowned UT national champions after they beat Arkansas in the game of the century? The First Fan anointed Darrell Royal’s boys before a single bowl game had been played.
President Obama wouldn’t have to go that far. I’m not suggesting that he name Boise State as the national champions. If for no other reason, I don’t think that anyone who plays on blue turf should get too much acclaim. Besides, if I remember my election map, Alabama has more electoral votes than Idaho.
All I think the president needs to do is invite Boise State to the White House. The president always invites the national champs to the White House. Now, I didn’t say that he should ignore the Crimson Tide. He could simply invite both. Say, have ‘Bama drop by at noon, and Boise over around three-ish.
That way he gives equal recognition to each without actually saying who is number 1. It would be a symbolic gesture, but it would get the point across. I think that the BcS boys might just get the gist.
Besides, it could make unlikely allies of President Obama and Congressman Joe Barton. How refreshing would it be to see anything bipartisan on Capitol Hill now days?
Who knows? If this works out, maybe the president would see fit to make me the ambassador to say…Tahiti?

Morgan: Biggest flaw of BCS? No TCU-Florida game
