If you like to try new recipes, then you are in luck when you receive the new issue of ex•lore for November — because included in the pages are the four recipes that won each category in the most recent Daily Sun recipe contest.
Gracing the cover of the November ex•plore is the overall winner, Gay Lyn Hendrik, at home, where she lives with husband Bobby and their dog, Holly. Inside, you will find Gay Lyn making cookies using a recipe that belonged to her grandmother, with a cookie jar bequeathed by the same grandmother at the ready to receive the cookies once baked.
I love that kind of stuff, having a cookie jar I treasure that once was my Grandma Neva’s.
A pretty awesome lady, Margie Taylor, will have a one-woman art show at the Warehouse Living Arts Theatre gallery the month of November, which is nearly upon us. Margie has talents a-plenty, which are mentioned in our feature about her. I’ve been fortunate to get to know Margie and her husband, Ted, in recent years, and count them among the many I feel blessed to know. Good people.
Also in November, the WLAC (the short version of Warehouse) will do a big production at the Palace Theatre, with “Oliver!” Not only is my former classmate, the always-hilarious Randy Jones, in this production, there are more than normal family connections. Bob Belcher ventured over to the Warehouse to find out about all this father/son, mother/daughter, and one three generation family connections. Don’t miss his story in the November ex•plore.
Crikey, Christmas will be here before we know it. I know, I know, gotta get through Halloween first (not my favorite holiday, mind you) and Thanksgiving (my MOST favorite holiday — food, but no pressure like costumes or gifts. Yeah!) Our November magazine has a handy gift guide of great things available right here in “tha ‘Can” as well as tips for hosting holiday parties.
December will be rife with opportunities to help those less fortunate than yourself. It will be a time of parties, events, and galas — and the third annual Navarro County Toy Run. A group of fine people I know get together in the summer and start meeting to strategize how to raise the most money for charities at Christmas, as well as collect as many toys for needy children as possible. They happen to have a good time while doing it, with a motorcycle run through the countryside, a dance, an auction, 50/50, live music and plenty of good food. We have more information in the November ex•plore.
A special camp for kids exists in Navarro County, and on Dec. 3, Camp of the Rising Sun will host a gala event at the Halbert House to raise money for kids with special needs to have their own camp experience. Complete with casino action, celebrity dealers, plenty of good food and libations, a Christmas tree auction and more, this event promises to be a fun evening, and for an excellent cause. Two days later, on Dec. 5, a tour of homes in the carriage district will also benefit Camp of the Rising Sun. To learn more about it (though mark your calendar now!) check out the November ex•plore.
And of course, we have our fantastic Tom Adams and Frank Means, traveling the world and the town! Thanks for reading!
