Frances Geraldine “Gerry” Tinkle Canant, 89, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 in Austin.

Gerry was born on Jan. 27, 1923 and grew up in the small farming community of Emhouse, near Corsicana, where she married Arthur Talmadge Canant Jr. on Aug. 10, 1947. She worked at the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana before moving to Austin in 1968. She then worked at the Texas Adjutant General’s Department at Camp Mabry until retiring in 1985. Following retirement, she found her last and best career with her husband at Austin’s Frank Erwin Special Events Center and DKR Memorial Stadium. She lived to work there, creating and maintaining friendships and hospitality through August of 2012.      

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, James Newell and Bird Copley Tinkle; her beloved husband of 57 years, Arthur Talmadge Canant Jr.; and four siblings, including her dear sister, Totsy Elliott, and brother, Randall Tinkle.

Survivors include her daughters, Rebecca Canant Cates and husband John of Houston, Teresa Canant-Finch and husband James of Round Rock; her three grandchildren, Bryan Cates of New York City, Lauren Cates Amador and husband Chris of Austin, and Jennifer Finch of McKinney; and one great grandson, Keller Amador. Other survivors include Gerry’s brother-in-law, Spencer Elliott of Corsicana, and her nephew, Phil Elliott and wife Shelley, and their daughters, Claire and Maggie, of Houston.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. in Austin.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana.
