Terrell Owens might have a star on his helmet come August? What? Owens, who has had clashes with every team he has played for might come to the Cowboys after Dallas released veteran Keshawn Johnson.
I’d take Keshawn over Owens as far as a person. As far as a player, Owens is the star. Of course many Cowboy fans would rather see the troubled wide receiver in any other uniform or not playing at all. But the added dimension he would provide for the ’Boys could be invaluable.
In the 1990’s the Cowboys had a balanced offense. They ran when they wanted to and they passed with ease.
Since the retirement of the triplets, it has been a slow, sluggish and predictable offense.
Now the new ‘Boys have a tight end that is comparable to Jay Novacek. They have two running backs that might be close to Emmitt Smith and they have ... nobody comparable to Michael “the playmaker” Irvin.
Terry Glen, the standout speedster, has great chemistry with new quarterback Drew Bledsoe. But if defenders double team the Ohio State product, the Cowboys have no go-to receiver.
The organization was hoping Johnson would be that guy, but dropped balls, fumbles and a flaring temper towards teammates did him in.
The offense never really looked comfortable with Johnson running routes. The ball would either be five yards in front of Johnson or ten feet over his head.
I never saw that problem with Glen, which makes the assumption that either Johnson was not comfortable in the offense or he simply did not have the talent to compete in the league anymore.
Back to Owens. Sure he might have more head problems than most, but the fact that he is a fast, strong and a tall receiver makes him the ideal fit to replace the legacy of Irvin.
If Cowboy fans remember, Irvin was as flamboyant and arrogant as they came. And the Cowboys were winning games by the dozen. That type of leadership and productivity has been lacking in the current ‘Boys.
Owens would restore that. He walks with a swagger, because he knows he is the best. He performs on the field and if can just learn to play nicely with his teammates — he could be the long-term answer Dallas has been looking for.
There is always the chance that Owens could be a problem and follow suit with his previous two teams. But Bill Parcells has made a living out of breaking guys like Owens. I don’t see that being a problem, especially since the Tuna is signed and ready to go for the 2006-07 season.
The real question is ... can Owens behave himself enough for the Cowboys to have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl? Only time will tell, but if the Tuna can housebreak Owens to his system, it could very well be the answer.

How ‘bout it?
In the words of the late, great Ronald Reagan ...
“Well, there you go again ...” -
Hey council!
Seems like only yesterday we turned the calendar over to New Year’s Day, 2007.
It also seems like, if you blinked, you missed the 2007 experience — that’s how fast the year has flown by in my mind. Yet, we’ve made it to another Christmas and New Year week relatively unscathed, with challenges aplenty remaining in our little town. -
Table this ...
That must be some table they’ve got at the Corsicana Government Center.
And, by the time they are through with the two items that have been “bouncing” on that table of late — the proposed hiring of a bond project coordinator and new regulations regarding the sale of scrap metal — they may need to get a 55-gallon can of “Pledge” to put the polish back on. -
Rules of War
Let me be clear. I never served in the military. Came close in the 70’s when we had draft cards and numbers. Would have gone had I been called, but I was not.
Having laid that “disclaimer” right out in front, I still have to ask the question — Why are we debating what constitutes “torture” and what doesn’t? - Good works Every once in a while I see, read or learn about something that helps to restore my faith in humanity. For the sake of good mental health, we all need that from time to time. Even before I tell you what has bolstered my faith, let me talk for just a moment about a very important word in the English language.
- Some real truth about personnel I did a column on county personnel and problems with the current system of compensation that appeared in the Daily Sun on June 29. I was criticized in a letter to the editor for not looking for the truth. I took that criticism to heart; and over the last few weeks, I searched for the truth.

- Commentaries worse than actual column In reply to Mr. Formby’s and Mr. Armon’s guest commentaries of March 26 and March 27, I might point out that it is our opinion page and not my opinion page. Both men were very critical of reading Mr. Narasimhan’s opinion, which did not coincide with their own. They even criticized the newspaper for printing it. I thought newspapers printed both sides of a story.
