Dawson Lions Club

On Oct. 24, Dawson Lions Club met in First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. The special guests were John Hopkins, Lions district governor for 2-X3, and his wife, Lion Sherrie Hopkins. The district governor is working on goals for the district and encourages each club to formulate “a program for the accomplishment, enactment or attainment of a goal or set of goals.” He asks several important questions of each club: “What are your membership goals and how are you going to retain the members you currently have?” “What projects are you going to do and who will be in charge? And what are you going to do with the money you raise?”

Dawson Lions are working to follow these instructions. The club put up the White Cane Day sign at the pavilion and then at the Dawson Volunteer Fire Department building during the Dawson homecoming Oct. 20. Lions Clubs collect donations for those whose sight is impaired. They also take donations of eyeglasses to be refurbished for those in need. They support the Lions Camp in Kerrville where children and youth with disabilities can learn to function and enjoy fellowship.

On Nov. 28, the club met to plan for the Christmas party to be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 14 at fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church in Dawson to enjoy a steak dinner and exchange gifts. Lion Patty McCormick presided. Lion George Faucett led the singing of “God Bless America” Lion Lena Mae Carver did piano accompaniment. Lion Jim Meredith did the benediction. Lion Cecil Sanders gave a prayer before the meal.



Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466

Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, United Daughters of the Confederacy, met at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at Redden House in Pioneer Village in Corsicana with 11 members present.

President Marlene Ivy called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Chaplain Geneva Davis led the pledges to the flags.

Ritual and Lord’s Prayer were led by the president. Minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved.

A letter about redistricting was read by the president.

A picture of Beauvior was shown.

The Jan. 26 forum to be held at Briarwood Country Club in Bryan was announced.

A discussion about purchasing process for UDC pins was helpful. The deaths of MNVR Relief recipients were announced.

Also Randolph Relief Fund is fully funded. Any donation will be made to memorial building.

Benevolent activities committee requests that each member bring a canned good to the next meeting. Jan Reeder will chair this chapter committee.

Grave marker chairman is compiling a list of Texans who died in or around the Battle of Jonesboro, Ga.

It was announced that the San Antonio Public Library will have free Saturday classes on the Texana/Genealogy.

The chapter has received certificates on reports made.

General convention will be in Rogers, Ark., in November. There was discussion of the 25th anniversary of the Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466. Charter members that need a certificate are Lena Mae Fryer, Edna Hodge, Marlene Ivy, Betty Partain, Jo Ann Surls, Jimma Traweek, and Marjorie Willard.

The program was presented by Marlene Ivy and concerned items donated to soldiers in Iraq.

Refreshments were served by Ivy. Meeting was adjourned with the singing of “Dixie’s Land.”

Members present were Pat Chappell, Geneva Davis, Judy Greene, Marlene Ivy, Dean Nevills, Janice Reeder, Barbara Robinson, Nancy Rula, Jimma Traweek, Nancy Weems and Gelene Simpson.

On Nov. 26, the chapter met at Temple Beth-El in Corsicana for the celebration of the 25 years since the chartering of the chapter.

President Marlene Ivy called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The ritual was recited and prayer offered. Pledges to the flags were led by chaplain Geneva Davis. The program was given by Dana Stubbs.

A report was given on the transfer of the Virginia B. Nash Scholarship which will remain in District VII, although the Mills Chapter is to change districts. Lynn Shaver will turn over records to Alice Kirk.

Jan Reeder reported that the canned food project in Tennessee Division had collected 3,000 as announced at the general convention.

Ex-division president Sherry Davis was named as honorary president general at the general convention. She was Texas Division president 1992-1994. She is a member of Southern Cross Chapter 2502 in Houston.

Texas Division won awards at general convention.

Chapter bylaws must be updated by December.

A ceremony honored 25-year members with their certificates: Kay Hable, Edna Hodge, Marlene Ivy, Betty Partain, Jo Ann Surls, Jimma Traweek, and Marjorie Willard. Several were unable to attend. Two faithful members, Opal Bonner and Iris Cowan, had passed away before the certificates were received.

The refreshment tables were decorated with white lace cloths by Geneva Davis, who also provided the delicious punch. A beautiful anniversary cake, white with red and blue roses, green leaves and “Happy 25th Birthday UDC” was enjoyed. Verna Bonner provided paper products and decorating.

The meeting was adjourned with the singing of “Dixie” and “Texas, Our Texas.”
