10th Annual Youth Art Show opens
From Staff Reports
Is there a future Dali, Rembrandt, or Monet in the house? There just might be! The Navarro Council of the Arts welcomed the 10th annual Young Artist Exhibition and Contest Wednesday at the Warehouse Living Arts Center.
This year’s theme titled “A View of Navarro County,” explored the idea of a child’s favorite place in their home county. Jurors for the contest were artists Barbara Jones and Margie Taylor with the Corsicana Art League. With over 150 entries the judging was not an easy task. The artwork is beautiful and should not be missed, the judges said.
Students were judged in three categories: elementary (pre-kindergarten through fifth grade), middle school (sixth through eighth grade), and high school. Savings bonds were awarded in denominations of $100, $75, $50 and were given to the first, second, and third place winners in each category.
First place in the high school division went to Amanda Barton from Corsicana High School; second place went to Grace Lee from Corsicana High School; and third place was Justin McCullom, also from Corsicana High School. Honorable mention awards went to Maricela Nieto, Whitten Tacker, Josh Bibb, Kyle Farmer, Taylor Simpson and Ricky Sanchez of CHS, Tyler Williams, Miriam Oxlaj, and Brendan Smith of Rice.
First place in the junior high division was Hayden Boyd of Collins Middle School; second was Carlos Castaneda and third was Celena Smithers, both of Rice. Honorable mentions were Ben Goodrich, Courtney Vineyard, and Kelsey Poynor of Rice, Elizabeth White, Evelyn Lopez, Rae Waites, David Lopez, Ramsey Campoz, John Hernandez, and Francisco Santoyo of CMS.
First place in the elementary division went to Erica Cruz of Sam Houston Elementary; second went to Kinsley Fuller of Sam Houston Elementary, and third place went to Ian Henigan of Sam Houston Elementary. Honorable mention awards went to Mariah Lee, Steven Zavala, Kaycie Chamberland, Jason Rivas, Hillary Hernandez, Gabe Gilfillan, Erick Salazar, and Katy Cook — all of Sam Houston.
The Youth Art Show will remain on exhibit at the Warehouse Living Arts Center Gallery until May 23. Gallery hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on the Youth Art Show, call the Navarro Council of the Arts at (903) 872-5411.
