Dawson Lions Club
Dawson Lions Club met at noon Aug. 27 for a luncheon meeting to hear Lee McCleary, Corsicana/Navarro County economic development director, speak about the power plants and other issues facing the county. The meeting was chaired by club president Jo Maxwell. Visitors besides McCleary were Charles Statham, Mike and Jean Kaster, Clay Beard and Sheriff Les Cotten. Coach Scott Hawkins was initiated as a new member of Dawson Lions by board chairman Lion Norman Summers, who also led the opening ceremonies of the pledge to the flag and the singing of “God Bless America.” The piano accompanist was Lion Lena Mae Carver. Lion chaplain Michael Redmond asked the blessing of the meal and offered the closing prayer.
The club is saddened by the death of the last surviving member of Dawson Lions — Conrad Milton “Sonny” Newton Jr. Dawson Lions Club was founded May 15, 1940. At that time, the membership fee was $2 per month. Current membership fee is $10 per month including lunch.
Dawson Lions Club works to provide support to Dawson Independent School District scholarships, eye exams and corrective eye wear, school activities and fund-raisers. In the community at large, Dawson Lions support projects and efforts to improve the community. The club is also proud to support the Texas Lions Camp for physically challenged children and youth, to support efforts to counter drug addiction, to donate to the Lone Star Eyebank and to recycle eyeglasses. Dawson Lions take pride in member achievement and in having fun enjoying each other’s company. New members are welcome.
