The Tigers know their district opponents now. They’ve played them all once.
Know your enemy, right?
So let’s try to figure out where that first victory is going to come for 0-20 Corsicana.
This week is daunting to say the least. The Tigers play two of the top three teams in 16-4A this week, that according to a 16-4A insider who offered his rankings of the district.
Corsicana gets the third best team on the road Tuesday, Waco University. The Trojans won the district opener in Corsicana, 65-28. Doesn’t look very promising.
The Tigers host Waco Midway on Friday. I don’t really feel like typing that score from the first game in today’s column. Just come and be loud. Midway is the best team in 16-4A.
The second best team comes next at Midlothian. The Panthers, 16-4A’s surprise team, won in Corsicana, 64-38.
Three of the last four games provide Corsicana’s best chance to get a “W.” Ennis, which beat the Tigers, 73-35, comes to Tiger Gym next Friday. I’d look for the Tigers to play much better this time around.
Next comes Waco High, likely the district’s final playoff team (Corsicana won this spot last year). The Tigers will have to play their best to beat a potential playoff team.
Which brings us to the last two games — Waxahachie at home and Cleburne on the road.
The Tigers only trailed the Indians by 11 points before a poor third quarter crushed their hopes in a 70-45 loss. Waxahachie will be fighting for a playoff spot and might play tight in an important game.
The last game, at Cleburne, is the most winnable. Corsicana of course lost to Cleburne on Friday night, 49-48. Antonie Chaney, who usually goes for 25 or 30 points, only had 14 in a devastating loss considering the Tigers lost an 8-point lead.
Lady Tigers soccer team hosting fundraiser: The Corsicana girls soccer program is hosting an amateur soccer tournament for one their fundraisers. Pool play will be held Jan. 31 and the semifinals/finals on Feb. 7. The games will be played at IOOF Park and 1001 17th Street.
It’s a great chance to support a winning soccer program. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Lady Tigers soccer program.
“This is the first time a tournament of this type has been held in Corsicana in numerous years,” Lady Tigers coach Stan Jones said.
The team’s second fundraiser will be a soccer clinic held at Tiger Stadium’s practice fields on Feb. 20. The time of the clinic is to be determined.
The clinic will be directed by the Lady Tigers soccer team and coaches and is offered for athletes U5 through U10.
Tigers’ Castaneda stepping up: Mario Castaneda has fought through an injury to carry the Tigers during a difficult pre-season schedule.
At the Mesquite Varsity Tournament Saturday, Castaneda scored three goals and had four assists in wins over Woodrow Wilson and Mesquite as the Tigers won the Silver Bracket.
Tigers coach Tom Sanchez worried before the season started that Castaneda would miss several matches to open the season. Instead Castaneda has illustrated to his young teammates how important it is to the whole group to play through pain if you can.
Lady Tigers at Navarro game: Art Prevost and his coaching staff never stop teaching. The entire team was at Navarro’s game against Blinn on Saturday afternoon.
