Tigers’ defense ran out of game-altering plays

TIGERS NOTEBOOK

Looking for a reason for the Tigers’ three-game losing streak? Just take a gander at a few of the team’s defensive stats in the last 12 quarters.

One caused fumble. One interception. Zero tackles for a loss. Zero sacks.

That’s right, the Tigers’ defense stopped forcing turnovers and stopped getting to the quarterback, and that has much do as anything with the Tigers’ slide out of the playoffs.

The Tigers had 16 tackles for losses, 12 sacks and 14 forced turnovers in their first six games. They went 4-2 during that stretch.

The lack of swing plays on defense has only aided three good offenses in Ennis, Waco and Waxahachie. Ennis scored on 5 of 8 possessions. Waco scored on 5 of 9. Waxahachie scored on 7 of 9.

For the record, all 17 scores in the last three games were touchdowns. A Tigers’ defense that prides itself on playing strong defense inside its own 20 has been able to do so during the crucial part of the season.

The Tigers allowed those three opponents to score on 65 percent of their possessions. The prior six opponents score on 32 percent.

Coach praises Ward: Henigan said that senior Matt Ward, who started his first game at safety last week, had six tackles against Waxahachie.

“The last three weeks he’s really grown up,” Henigan said. “It’s just really clicked that he can blow people up. This is as well as he’s played in four years.”

Glover could play in last game: Cornerback Calvin Glover, who has been out since the district opener against Waco University with a hand injury, could return for the season finale.

Glover, the team’s top cover corner, was slated to go to the doctor on Wednesday.

Glover, a senior, still leads the team with six pass breakups, three more than four other players.

Briefly...: The Tigers played last season with nothing on the line in the final game and lost to Red Oak, 35-34. The Tigers missed a extra point and three field goals in the game, including a game-winning field goal attempt.
