Lady Tigers host 12 team tournament
Lady Tigers coach Laura Walker decided three years ago that Corsicana had the facilities to take advantage of the fact that no other 4A school in the area was hosting a pre-Christmas tournament.
It turned out to be the right thought.
Corsicana has another quality field that includes 5A schools Haltom and Sam Houston, which has come to town all three years, and McKinney for its Lady Tigers Classic that starts today with pool play.
The Lady Tigers will play A. Maceo Smith at 1 p.m. today and then Manvel out of Alvin ISD at 5 p.m. Bracket play begins Friday with the championship game set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
It also helps that the Lady Tigers' program appears to be on upswing and could make their first run at a playoff spot since coach Ron Morgan took them to the postseason in 1993.
The Lady Tigers (1-0) won their opener, 59-50, over 5A Arlington Lamar on Tuesday night. They are a solid pick to contend for a playoff spot in 16-4A.
And they have a tournament that teams are booking their place into the field within days after Walker posts the advertisement for it.
“It’s just gone extremely well,” Walker said.
