Mildred goes for college coach for girls

Adam Taylor snagged out of Moore, Okla., will replace Nichols

Adam Taylor, who has spent the last several years coaching at the college level, has been selected as the new girl’s basketball coach at Mildred.

Taylor was the athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Hillsdale College in Moore, Okla. last year. He also was a head women’s basketball coach at Crown College, a Division III school in Minnesota. He has been a women’s assistant basketball coach at Division I Wisconsin-Green Bay and an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bryan College, a NAIA school in Tennessee.

Taylor, 37, said he was ready to be a high school coach. He replaces Charlie Nichols, who left Mildred to be an assistant girls basketball coach at Corsicana.

“Athletics are important in Texas,” Taylor said. “The kids, they all participate in some sport. I fell in love with the community. It’s a great small-town atmosphere and Mildred has great academics.”

Taylor, who grew up in Tulsa, said he will teach fundamentals.

“I love defense,” he said. “To build a great program you have to start with defense.”

Mildred athletic director Patrick Harvell said hiring Taylor was a slam dunk. He will start in the next two or three weeks if not sooner.

“He was very sharp, very polished,” Harvell said. “To me, he was head and shoulders above all the rest.”

Harvell said Tuesday that he is in the process of hiring a boys basketball coach to replace Robert Chaney. Harvell said he hopes to reach a decision by the end of the week.
