The Corsicana Tigers boys basketball team lost a 49-48 heartbreaker to the Cleburne Yellow Jackets Friday night.
The Tigers came into the game focused and ready to take on the Yellow Jackets.
After a slow start to the first quarter, Corsicana was able to keep it close and went into halftime trailing 25-18.
Cleburne was put on the foul line multiple times in the first half and was able to capitalize on the free throws, something Corsicana struggled with all night only being able to make 2 out of 6 attempts.
The Tigers (0-20, 0-7 in 16-4A) started the third quarter with a bang and were able to shorten the Yellow Jacket lead to 32-26. Corsicana then went on a 14-0 run into the fourth which was highlighted by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Devin White to put the Tigers ahead 33-32 to end the third.
The Tigers lead peaked at eight points with seven minutes to go in the fourth, however Cleburne's defense forced turnovers and made key rebounds that led the Yellow Jackets to regain the lead.
As the Yellow Jackets (3-20, 1-6) continued to put points on the board Corsicana followed. Antonie Chaney took the reigns of the Tiger offense and was able to shorten the lead to 49-48 with 25 seconds left in the fourth. After a travel by Cleburne with 20 seconds remaining, the ball was given to Chaney in hopes of bringing home the first win of the season. With three seconds remaining Chaney missed a deep 3-pointer that went out of bounds, which seemed to give Cleburne the win.
During the throw-in with two seconds, Devin White intercepted the ball and was fouled. Giving Corsicana possession with one second remaining.
The Tigers lobbed the ball in to sophomore Christian Hines who was unable to make the catch, sealing the deal for Cleburne.
Freshman Hunter Denbow remarked that the Tigers “played hard for 32 minutes” and are “starting to play as a team”.
A great effort was put forth by the entire team on Friday night.
Antonie Chaney and Devin White led Corsicana in scoring, racking up scores of 14 and 12, while Corey Wilson and Christian Hines dominated the paint combining to have 18 of the Tigers' 29 rebounds.
When asked what he thought the Tigers could have done better during the game, Hines answered “just blocked out, got more rebounds, and execute on the plays we ran.”
The Tigers look to rebound in their upcoming game against a tough Waco Midway team.
Senior TaVeon Kelly said he is “very positive about the next game” and he thinks they will “come out harder and more focused than tonights game”.
