Frost Tournament: Dawson boys survive, remain unbeaten

Bulldogs beat Trinidad in double OT, 48-45

FROST — The deeper into the season the Dawson boys go with an undefeated record, the more likely there will be games like Thursday’s against Trinidad to open the Frost Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Maybe it was the early start time. Maybe it was a lack of energy or focus. More than likely it was that Dawson is wearing a big target right now.

Whatever it was, the Bulldogs survived for a 48-45 victory in double overtime on Thursday — with the emphasis on survived.

Nick Warren made a layup with 1:30 to go in double overtime, and Dawson didn't allow a point in the final four minutes as the Bulldogs remained undefeated at 10-0 on the season.

“Give Trinidad credit, they came out to play,” Dawson coach Gary Kay said. “I know we didn't play well.”

Dawson struggled making free throws, especially in the second overtime. They missed 5 of 6 from the charity stripe in the second OT.

The good news is Dawson played hounding defense, keeping Trinidad off the scoreboard. The Trojans missed two 3-pointers in the waning seconds, including the last that bounced off the back of the rim with 1.2 seconds left.

Dawson will play Vanguard, which beat Wortham, at 4:40 p.m. Friday. Dawson could get a test in the championship game against Blooming Grove or Frost.

Dawson trailed at halftime, 22-18. The Bulldogs fell behind by six points on three different occasions in the third quarter. Warren’s 3-pointer with 3:33 left in the third quarter cut Trinidad’s lead to 30-27.

Dawson rallied to tie the game at 32-32 on a 3-pointer by Steven Travis and a putback by Hayden Hatfield.

Trinidad got its lead back up to 36-32 in a fourth quarter that proved to be a defensive struggle. The Bulldogs rallied on two free throws by Dustin Sanders and a driving layup by Warren with 46 seconds left in regulation.

A beautifully timed block by Michael Vaughn with 1.2 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime.

The first overtime was wild. Travis hit a 3-pointer for a 41-40 lead with 1:54 left in the game, but Trinidad came right back with a trey for a 43-41 lead. In fact, Trinidad went up 45-41.

But Warren banked in a 3-pointer to cut Trinidad’s lead to 45-44 with 20.2 seconds left in the first overtime. After a steal, Nick Renfro made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game.

Trinidad missed the front end of a one-in-one free throw with 2.2 seconds that likely would have won the game.
