Hospital recognized by respiratory therapist organization

Navarro Regional Hospital has earned its stripes in terms of respiratory care, according to the American Association for Respiratory Care.
The Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of respiratory care services available in hospitals.
Only about 700 hospitals or 15 percent of hospitals in the U.S. have applied for and gotten the award.
Respiratory therapists are specially trained to provide breathing treatments to people with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS, and other lung or lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and work in response teams on medical emergencies.
In order to be recognized, the hospital had to show that it met the following conditions:
• All bedside respiratory therapists are certified by the state
• Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours a day
• Respiratory procedures are written out
• A doctor is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.
It’s the first time Navarro Regional Hospital has applied for the award, according to Frank Martinez, director of marketing and business development at Navarro Regional Hospital.
“We’re trying not only to improve the quality, but document that quality,” Martinez said. “If there’s a benchmark for a department, we’re going to try to meet it and exceed it.”
The QRCR program grew out of growing concerns among health care leaders and the general public regarding the safety and quality of health care services provided to patients, according to the American Association for Respiratory Care.
