Samuels, Turner honored by Navarro County Historical Society
A walking encyclopedia, and a book about learning history while walking — a perfect duo for an awards ceremony.
Such was the scene Monday as the Navarro County Historical Society honored two local history buffs and preservationists at its annual awards banquet.
Babbette Samuels and Larry Turner were the honorees at the banquet. Samuels was awarded the “Preservationist” award, while Turner was named “Historian of the Year” for his efforts in preserving Corsicana’s history and oil heritage.
Samuels is a true historian of Navarro County. Her work in preserving the history of the Hebrew Cemetery, and the Hebrew history and culture of Corsicana, were cited as reasons for the honor, a labor of love for Samuels.
“I don’t do it for (the award),” Samuels said. “It’s what I call a ‘Garden of Love.’”
Turner’s passion for history became evident with a DVD presentation he put together paying tribute to the rich oil heritage of Corsicana and Navarro County. He was also recognized for a booklet he authored for the Chamber of Commerce, a “walking tour” of historic Corsicana, and is also busy developing a new “driving” tour of historic homes in Corsicana.
New officers for the Historical Society were elected at Monday’s meeting. Kit Herrington will serve as president, Stephen Farris as vice-president, Velma Bonner as treasurer, and Eddie Pevehouse will serve as secretary.
