Bells ring for those in need
Salvation Army prepares for annual Christmas Kettle drive
Once again it is the time of year to hear the bells ring.
The Salvation Army kettle bells, that is. Beginning Friday, the bell ringers will be out at several locations, and the army asks for your help.
A part-time job, the call for bell ringers was answered by approximately 80 people, some homeless, some from group homes, but all in need.
“Most of them want to ring the bell full time, but this is a part-time job,” said Jackie Williams, case worker for The Salvation Army.
Even those with very little want to help in these tough economic times, as one man approached Capt. Cathy Adams about how he could help with the toy drive.
There are several ways to help people who receive assistance through The Salvation Army. Angel Trees are located at Walmart, The Cook Center, VF Outlet, Bealls, Corsicana Public Library, Corsicana City Hall, Kerens City Hall, and Citizens National Bank. Each angel on the tree represents a child in need, and gifts may be purchased and taken unwrapped to The Salvation Army, 212 E. First Ave.
The kettle drive to collect money to be used to help needy families will kick off Friday, and kettles will be located at VF Outlet, Big Lots, Olé, Brookshire’s, CVS Pharmacy, Collin Street Bakery (both locations), Atwoods, Bealls (back door), Gander Mountain, and also Wal-Mart, after Thanksgiving.
Boxes to collect toys for needy children will be placed at Kerens High School, Dollar General in Kerens, both Dollar Generals in Corsicana, the 620 E. Seventh Ave. location of Family Dollar, Walmart, Travis Center, Carroll Elementary, Navarro Elementary, Bowie Elementary, and Corley Funeral Home.
The last day for applications to be received for assistance from The Salvation Army for Christmas is today. Contact the office at (903) 874-7131. This year, though the army will take applications for food assistance, the Food Pantry will handle all food requests.
“We are in huge need of the public’s support,” Adams said. “Both with our kettles, and with our Angel Tree. If you need more information, or have any questions, please call our office at (903) 874-7131, and ask for me or Sparkie Gavin.”
