Corsicana — Grateful for support

To the Editor: This letter is to publicly thank those who helped us provide a wonderful Christmas for foster children in the care of Arrow Child and Family Ministries foster families. Once again, the First United Methodist Church provided the venue, some of the youth supervised by Dr. John and Lisa Updegrove served and helped with the children, and church members and groups purchased wonderful gifts for the children. Santa (aka James Murphy) appeared and Sandra McClure Mahood entertained the children and adults with a reading from a Christmas play. We are also very grateful to Dickey’s Barbecue for the wonderful food. Once again, we have been blessed by a generous and compassionate community and church family. Thank you.

To the Editor: On behalf of the Mosaic in Corsicana staff, volunteers and the individuals we serve, I would like to thank those who gave so generously to our gift fund this past holiday season. The following businesses allowed us to place donation collection boxes at their locations: Prosperity Bank, Citizens National Bank-downtown location, Citizens National Bank-College Park Mall location, Brookshire’s Grocery Store, Navarro Pecan, and Two Doors Down. Also, thank you to MAAG Inc., who made a significant donation this holiday season. The donations from the collection boxes are placed in our gift fund. These funds are used to supply gifts at Christmas for those we support and cover expenses throughout the year when those we support cannot afford items for themselves.

Mosaic in Corsicana is a not-for-profit which assists individuals with intellectual disabilities by helping them reach their goals. We support them and empower them to be their best. We ask them what they would like to achieve and do our best to make it possible. Mosaic in Corsicana’s staff and volunteers are presently striving to make a difference in the lives of over 50 individuals with different challenges, strengths, hopes, dreams, and desires.

Mosaic’s Mission states: In partnership with people who have disabilities, Mosaic provides supports and advocates that all may realize God’s gift of wholeness of life. Thank you to all the above businesses, their employees, and customers for being a part of that partnership.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Jordan

The Halbert House

To the Editor: Mr. Jimmy Hale gave Corsicana something special that the town could be proud of, and in the process, replaced an eyesore which was a blight on the town.

The Appraisal District very much needs to get real and be fair to Mr. Hale.

Mr. Hale did not restore the house to splendor so that he could profit from it, but to make it a wonderful site to see, and to use for weddings, etc. Why should he suffer an unfair and ridiculous increase in value and taxes when he performed a service to Corsicana? Tearing down this house would be a travesty.

It seems that the house market has declined in our economic crises, and houses are devalued rather than increasing in value.

Share the ‘secret’

To the Editor: I work in downtown Dallas and at least once a week I get to talk to groups of people at the office about the pleasure of living in Corsicana.

After I finish telling them about the beautiful and affordable homes available (compared to Dallas real estate), the lakes, the lower cost of living, the great places to eat, the Warehouse Arts and the Palace, I finish by noting it’s just an easy hour’s drive to downtown on I-45. By then several want directions and start making plans to visit.

With an increasing number of people looking for alternatives to living within Dallas, the choice of Corsicana is a “no brainer.” Let’s find ways to get the word out to a greater number of people.

In response

To the Editor: This is in response to David Eagle ... for saying I attacked a 10 year old for standing up for his convictions. If you read my letter, you would see that I was opposed to this “blame America first” song and dance that liberals love to sing.

Mr. Eagle, where would you rather live — in America or elsewhere? I never said that the USA was perfect. However, we remain a force for good in the world and, yes, a beacon of freedom and hope for the downtrodden of the world. Try writing a letter critical of the government in some corners of the world, Mr. Eagle. Not only would you be censored but your friendly neighborhood “secret police” would be paying you a visit. What happened to Mr. Eagle?

By the way, Mr. Eagle, why don’t you ask the poor people of Haiti what kind of bully the United States is? Some people ... that believe we are such a terrible and oppressive country are the first to ask for our help. I’m proud that we give our aid freely and unending to people all over the world...

Instead of attacking me, Mr. Eagle, why don’t you exercise your right to vote, and vote this current bunch out of office? They are spending us over a cliff...

Big believer

To the Editor: Although I do not live in Corsicana, I live in Navarro County, work in Corsicana, and make about 97 percent of my purchases within the city. I’ve lived in many cities and many states in my life, and I truly enjoy shopping where people recognize me and treat me with appreciation and kindness.

This weekend, I received my new copy of Texas Monthly magazine and was thrilled to see Corsicana featured in the issue. I love that Texas Monthly often features towns that are worthy of a weekend trip, and I am so glad their writers have realized that Corsicana is not simply a “pass-through” town on Interstate 45. Corsicana truly is a destination and easy for us to take for granted.

I encourage residents of Navarro County to read the article in Texas Monthly and see this community through the eyes of the folks at Texas Monthly. And let’s give kudos to our arts program and Palace Theatre, and businesses such as Caleb’s, Two Doors Down, Victorian Sample, Canterbury Court, Collin Street Bakery, Sweet Tangerine, and The Children’s Shop for making their way into the magazine.

We also have countless other businesses that make Corsicana a destination and satisfy my shopping needs.

I am a big believer in shopping locally, and not just for local economic reasons. Shopping locally is a pleasure, and that pleasure has now been expressed in Texas Monthly.

To the Editor: It is shocking Corsicana is running Hawkins Tire Company out of business. Yes, I’m sure it’s true some conglomerate could come in with a nice brick building after running Mr. Hawkins off, but then everyone that has been a customer there for years, including my husband and I, would go somewhere else as they would have to charge much more for new tires and repairs than Mr. Hawkins has.

    Taking note
To the Editor: As a former supervisor for the Texas Department of Human Services for Navarro County, I was glad to see that our president and staff have noticed that Texas is not providing for the needs of our people.  According to the article, Texas is rated the lowest in the nation. This is a tragedy that didn’t have to happen.
