Sincere thanks to all

To the Editor: Recently my husband and I had a quick snack at the Whataburger in Corsicana on our way home to Austin. Unfortunately I left my purse there hanging on the back of the chair.

I didn’t realize my mistake until I was back home. By that time the manager Brian had already called our home and said that an employee, Rachel, had found my purse and had given it to him for safekeeping.

I am deeply grateful for the integrity of the employees of Whataburger and hope that you are proud that these individuals are your fellow citizens.

Next to Austin, Corsicana is now my new favorite Texas town!

Budget advice

To the Editor: Let us make things easy about our budget.

The mayor and the county judge, let each one call the department heads and ask them to each cut his budget by 10 percent and tell the department head nicely that if I don’t hear from you in one week, I will be glad to do it for you.

Incorrect change

To the Editor: Has anyone else noticed how NOTHING has “changed?” I distinctly recall a time in the 2008 presidential campaigns when the people of America were promised swift and resolute change. Well, Mr. President, we have seen absolutely nothing.

I was never a fan of Barack Obama, but I respected the man and even sometimes conceded that he might bring a new type of leadership to the White House. I was dead wrong. Since January 20, America has sunk deeper into recession, yet somehow media pundits and celebrity personalities pin the blame on President Bush. President Bush is no longer in the White House, and therefore is not in the least bit to blame for the failed policies of Mr. Obama.

While his approval ratings have declined since his election, our biased media has somehow managed to cover that up. Remembering the last four years after Bush’s re-election, all we saw was the president’s poll numbers, but now we see nothing of his successor’s.

Most importantly, our powerful nation is in danger of buckling and falling from under us. Our economy is in serious need of new direction, two wars are under way, unemployment is at an all-time high, our healthcare system is rapidly deteriorating, social security is headed for failure, and a host of foreign nations want to see the United States wiped off the map, but our president is busy indulging in thousand-dollar date nights with his wife. Where’s the urgency we were promised now, Mr. Obama?

While Washington drifts further and further away from the wants and wishes of the American people and, under the Obama administration, further from the Constitution, we can only hope and pray for a strong, new voice to lead the American people. When you are given incorrect change at a grocery store, you turn the buggy around and demand what you are owed. Maybe it’s time that’s what we did as a nation. Mr. President, you’re incorrect change.

Reunion thoughts

To the Editor: We did it! Finally! Been thinking of doing it for a couple of years now. Had a grandkids reunion! However, in this case there was very little “reunion” as most were meeting for the first time. I have 10 grandkids, all married except for two bachelors. Also 16 great-grandkids and, so far, five great-great-grandchildren (one born in Arizona in the early morning of the very day of the big reunion and a 1-month-old baby boy actually attended from Colorado). We had a five generation picture of us — the baby, his mother, my grandson, my daughter and myself. It was impressive.

My grandkids live in Colorado, Texas, Arizona, Florida, California, Wisconsin, and Nevada. So it is easy to understand why some have never met. Their professions are varied but all seem happy and fulfilled. Being so scattered, the actual staging of this event fell mostly on the shoulders of the one grandchild in Texas. She has a family and a rather demanding career so, as usual , in such matters, her mother, Norma, took over and with her usual energy and happy nature brought it all together. Everyone was appreciative. Of course we all learned a lot. I heard mention of the next one being planned in California next year. With this family’s track record there’s a good chance the coming event will be larger in numbers. But my pride in my family could be no greater.

Warnings appreciated

To the Editor: We would like to say thank you to the community in which our family lives. On the morning of July 30, we were awakened out of a dead sleep at 6:30 a.m. by the Navarro County Office Of Emergency Management. We had a 5 to 10 minute notification that a tornado was in our immediate area. Thank you!!! We encourage every citizen to visit this Web site: http://www.navarrocountyoem.org/index.php. Knowing Navarro County has this program in place is a great peace of mind. Please familiarize yourself with what to do in emergency situations. We have printed off material taken straight from this Web site and we reference to it when needed . Thank you God for your protection. Thank you to the founder of this program. Thank you to the individual who stepped up to the plate to get it implemented in our county and last but not least thank you Corsicana.

Pets say thanks

To the Editor: The Navarro County Animals at Risk Foundation would like to thank all our donors, sponsors, auction winners and everyone who attended our “Pause for Paws” event July 30. If not for these wonderful people, NCARF would not be able to offer our services to Navarro County animals and their caregivers. Our programs, such as low-cost spay/neuter, low-cost vaccinations, and emergency veterinary assistance, rely heavily on donations. Because your generosity our programs have received a much-needed boost.

A special thanks goes to Amy Roberts and her staff at the Wicklow Inn for the delicious food and attentive service, and to Shae Hillock and her models from S&S Designs for the great style show.

In these tough times, we all need to remember that the animals suffer without our help.
