About alcohol sting

To the Editor: In response to the letter ‘Alcohol sting misses point’ in the March 15 Daily Sun:

First, probably surprising to many, there is no age limit on sales staffs that sell beer or wine in “convenience stores” according to state laws. This is a major problem since children and adolescents usually do not have the skills to determine if a person buying alcohol is intoxicated or is using an altered identification. Responsible store owners realize this and staff older personnel in their stores to sell alcoholic beverages.

Second, allowing minors access to alcohol is a huge problem for all residents. The Department of State Health Services estimate that underage alcohol abuse costs Texans $5,300,000,000 annually in accidents, vandalism, unwanted teen pregnancies, spread of STDs, and other health costs. In addition, it is the leading cause of teen deaths.

Alcohol stings help correct sales personnel that do not perform their jobs properly in checking customers’ IDs. It is only one of the many very important tools used by law enforcement to reduce youth access to alcohol.

We all need to work to keep our community a safer and healthy environment for our youth. Our law enforcement agencies are doing their part!

Local ‘Tea Party?’

To the Editor: Could the Corsicana Daily Sun announce to its readers that the growing tax problem is causing a stir in this country? By visiting a few Web sites (or keep the Corsicana Daily Sun in front of you), find out where you can become a part of the solution in taking part in the TEA Party Day on April 15. Maybe someone in Navarro County could organize a Tea Party here for our citizens to attend. If interested, start by visiting TEAPartyDay.com. It would be very reassuring to some of us that would spend that day in an office or other job while our fellow brothers and sisters were representing us at the local city hall or county courthouse to stand up and say enough is enough. Come on America, Texans, Navarro County citizens ... start with a Tea Party!

Oak Trail needs city’s help

To the Editor: A big thank you to the Daily Sun for running the stories about the closing of the Oak Trail Golf Course. At least Corsicana cannot say it was not aware of the closure.

I first played at the Oaks in 1960 when there were sand greens. Yes, many of us have played there for many years. We hate to see it close, for sure.

Corsicana has at least four major public parks. In these parks are baseball fields, softball fields, tennis courts, walking tracks, football fields, soccer fields. These are all paid for with our tax money. There is no income other than taxes, I am thinking.

A municipal golf course would bring in money other than taxation should the city decide to “test the waters.” Green fees and cart cost, driving range, and items from the pro shop would eventually make a profit for the city. No telling what else the golf course might offer the city if it had a municipal course. I do know for a fact that seniors playing in the weekly senior scramble have frequented our city’s eating establishments, candy factory, sports store(s), bakery, etc.

The city could benefit in other ways by reducing the taxes that are placed on the present owner of the golf course. Water rates could be lowered if the course was city-owned and controlled.

Our city fathers have encouraged us to trade right here in Corsicana. I, for one, have done just that. Hmmmm, since I will have to drive to other cities to play golf ... You can fill in the rest of the previous sentence.

In case I have not made myself clear, I am asking the city to consider buying or leasing Oak Trail Golf Course. My family moved to Corsicana in 1948. This is my hometown. After all, didn’t we spend about $500,000 on one city block of nostalgic brick?

Re: ‘What is Obama hiding?’

To the Editor: In regard to Obama not producing his birth certificate, Charles, you just don’t understand. McCain’s eligibility for the presidency was investigated because he is a Republican.

Obama’s eligibility will never be questioned by his supporters because he is a Democrat.

Maybe that’s why Obama, the candidate, did not support the Fairness Doctrine.
