Letters to the Editor
LETTERS: In tribute to a fallen soldier
To the Editor: On Sunday, Nov. 8, the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1009, Navarro Rifles, put up flags on veterans’ graves. This year it meant a little more than usual for me. One of the soldiers killed at Fort Hood was one of my tank company commanders.
Capt. John Gaffaney commanded Company C, 3rd Battalion 185th Armor, when I was the battalion commander. He was among those killed on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Fort Hood. He was 56 years old.
John retired as a major from the California Army National Guard after 20 years of service. After 9/11, he was inspired to reenter the Army as a captain in the United States Army Reserve (inactive). At that time, although he desired to be deployed, he was refused reentry to active duty due to a hearing deficiency. He, like me, spent a lot of time on the tank ranges. Persisting with his requests, he obtained a waiver and was activated in October 2009 for a year’s tour of duty. He was at Fort Hood, processing for deployment.
John Gaffaney was a Serra Mesa, Calif., resident and a supervisor for San Diego County’s Adult Protective Services Department. In that capacity he served seniors and persons with disabilities who were victims of abuse.
John was an enthusiastic baseball fan and devoted to his family — his wife and one grown son.
He was a quiet and serious type of person. He always stopped to see me and spend a few minutes just talking.
Spia z Bogiem, Sleep with God my friend.
Lt. Col. Richard A Koziol, Armor (retired)

To the Editor: It is shocking Corsicana is running Hawkins Tire Company out of business. Yes, I’m sure it’s true some conglomerate could come in with a nice brick building after running Mr. Hawkins off, but then everyone that has been a customer there for years, including my husband and I, would go somewhere else as they would have to charge much more for new tires and repairs than Mr. Hawkins has.

Taking note
To the Editor: As a former supervisor for the Texas Department of Human Services for Navarro County, I was glad to see that our president and staff have noticed that Texas is not providing for the needs of our people. According to the article, Texas is rated the lowest in the nation. This is a tragedy that didn’t have to happen. -
