Letters to the Editor 12/20/09

Pleased with decision

To the Editor: I have long heard that people refuse to do business in Corsicana because it is impossible to deal with city regulations.

After attending the workshop on the special use permit for Effective Environmental Inc., I can understand why. The management of that company showed exceptional fortitude when barraged by the city manager and city attorney with questions and requests for stipulations, such as a list of all compounds known and unknown(?) that will be emitted into the air.

It was obvious that they did not have a clue as to how the permitting process by EPA and TCEQ works.

Fortunately, Mayor Brown, Tom Wilson, and George Walker brought sanity to the proceedings by voting for the SUP in the regular council meeting, and leaving the permitting process to those who know - EPA and TCEQ.

As a result, Corsicana may be able to get some much needed good paying jobs for our local economy.

4-1-1 on 9-1-1

To the Editor: In response to Ms. Jacobs’ story about 9-1-1 dispatchers.

If there is a need in our community for our dispatchers to be able to communicate CPR instructions during a 9-1-1 call, it does not take state legislation to change. This certainly could be provided as part of additional advanced training for our 9-1-1 employees within the first 180 days of employment.

By the way, why do we have two 9-1-1 dispatchers in our community anyway? The costs could be certainly be reduced if we had one system, and savings could upgrade our staff and facilities. I believe the city has over the past year, found it difficult to hire 9-1-1 staff and overtime has been routinely required of the current staff which certainly affects their work load and time off. I understand that the county rarely has openings in their 9-1-1 dispatch system.

It is time now to look at having our county provide 9-1-1 service for our city as well as the other communities in the county. The county needs to enlarge its facility, and combining the two programs would be cost effective.

Parade fan mail

To the Editor: I loved the downtown Christmas parade and thought it to be a tremendous success! I hope that Dennis Thornberg will continue to organize this beautiful and bright gift to the Corsicana community for years to come!

Social (Security) concerns

To the Editor: Shame on you congressmen and senators, you who make hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions from God knows where also and cheat us, senior citizens, of our Social Security Cost of Living Allowance which doesn’t equal few dollars but give yourselves thousands of dollar raises each year.

I would like to know how can you sleep at night when you do this to us who put you in Washington and we made you who you are.

Be on our side for a change and get us a little raise on our Social Security check.

Would you pray about it, Mr. Congressmen and Mr. Senators?

May God help us all,

Farouk Qubty

Reaction to reaction

To the Editor: The letter published last Sunday in which the writer scolded you for printing a standard press release about President Obama’s Thanksgiving address reflects an extreme bias. Why should anyone be offended by such an ordinary story?

If one disagrees with any policy or idea of our leaders, then the reasons for disagreement should be stated. Attacking our president with derision and name calling lacks logic and is ultimately a disservice to our nation.

President Obama is not a Muslim, and he is as much white as he is black. Yet some people actually believe these and other false ideas about him.

I have not agreed with absolutely every action of any of the 13 presidents we’ve had in my lifetime (actually 14, but I was too young to remember anything about President Hoover). Yet I think every one of them tried to accomplish what he thought was best for America.

We will all be better served if we base our words and our actions upon a careful evaluation of facts instead of emotional reaction to personalities.
