Corsicana — O’Neal receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Bill O'Neal, longtime history teacher at Panola College recently returned from Prescott, Ariz., where he received multiple honors at the annual meeting of the Wild West Historical Association.

At the Awards Luncheon, Bill was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the field of Western history. He also received a literary award for the Best Article of the Year: “Texas — Gunfighter Capitol of the West,” in Wild West Magazine.

Bill was asked to be the leadoff speaker of the conference, presenting a program on the Arizona Rangers, subject of two of his books. Throughout the presentation he was impressively backed up by the Lonesome Valley Company of the modern Rangers.

During a hilarious “Evening with Bill O'Neal,” there was an interview and an audience participation session in which individuals told stories about Bill.

Bill recently has been designated State Historian of Texas, and in Prescott he visited with an old friend, Marshall Trimble, who is the State Historian of Arizona. As State Historian of Texas, Bill will have an institutional affiliation with Panola College.
