Corsicana —
So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, adieu, adieu, to you and you and you…” are the famous words to a great classic from “The Sound of Music.” Then there is an oldies song from the 60’s called “See you in September.’’ Well… dear readers it’s been a nice ride but I won’t see you in September or any time now. I guess old newspaper delivery guys like me will now join the buggy whip makers as “yesterday’s news.’’ You may know by now the fact that today is the last day I’ll be totin’ your Corsicana Daily Sun for your reading pleasure.
Thanks to all my wonderful customers I’ve had for the last dozen or so years. Several of you know reading my column over the years I started out delivering the Dallas Morning News on my trusty bicycle as a schoolboy. My eighteen year old nephew still thinks I rode on the back of a dinosaur and Fred Flintstone was a customer of mine. Anyhow, folks your paper will now be delivered by the intrepid personnel of the US postal service. In 2009 all of us Daily Sun carriers were told by a mournful Raymond our services would no longer be needed to bring your Daily Sun to your home during the week. We figured then it’d be a matter of time before they would no longer need us at all.
Thanks to my boss over the years for hangin’ with us. David Smith, Raymond Linex II, and big Bob Belcher…. It’s been great workin’ for ya’ll. It’s my desire everyone will continue to read the fine works of “Double J,’’ aka Janet Jacobs, Deanna Brown, and the guys like Todd in the sports section. I was proud to be a small part of the C (Corsicana Daily Sun) team.
I feel blessed to have met some interesting, diverse, and caring people that were “my customers.” Several of them have passed on and my condolences to their friends and family. Along those lines is a little attempt at humor we “carriers’’ often employed over the years. Sometimes we were told to discontinue delivering certain folk’s paper. The initials exp was placed by their name. It was the office’s way of telling us that customer’s paper subscription was expired. If it was an elderly customer we used to say, “Does that mean the customer has expired, or their subscription has expired?’’ Please don’t be offended by that statement. It in no way was meant to be disrespectful. After all folks, I’m no spring chicken myself.
One morning upon delivering the paper into a gated lake development, I was nearly trapped inside said gate. There had been a fire off FM 416. The fire caused a problem with the electricity in the area. I just left the gated community in the nick of time. A few minutes later and I wouldn’t have been able to exit out the gate. I remember calling my boss David to tell him I almost was trapped like a rat. He replied, “That would have been one of the most unusual reasons I’ve ever gotten for customer’s papers to be delivered late.’’ Delivering your Daily Sun in the rural area I was presented with various challenges and surprises. One morning, I was scared out of what little wits I have by a misguided barn owl. As I was navigating a back country road, something came through my open window and struck me upside the head. It hurt some, and I remember feeling something liquid and warm running down my face. As I pulled over to get my bearings, I saw a pair of fearsome eyes staring at me from my dashboard. “What the BLANK,’’ I said to myself. It turned out to be that owl. Edgar Allen Poe would be proud because I thought: “Once upon an early mourn, an Owl attacked me so forlorn,’’ As I shooed the owl from my car it said, “Who for ever more.’’ Quote the owl evermore.” I considered myself lucky I was no worse for wear and continued on with my Daily Sun deliveries. The mailman had nothing on me, as rain, shine, or a wayward owl kept me from my appointed rounds.
Dear “customers,” “quote the Raven nevermore.” I will miss seeing you along my route, I enjoyed each and every Sunday and knowing all of you. Have a nice week “dear readers.”
