By the time you read this, football season will be over for many teams even though we still have some Golden Circle teams in playoffs. For our household, basketball is now on the horizon.
Due to my son’s torn ACL last November and subsequent surgery, he missed last year’s season of playing basketball. Even though he went to all the practices and sat on the sidelines with his team, it wasn’t quite the same. We’re hoping for a healthy year where he can play this season. I can’t wait!
Basketball is — for the most part — such a a fast-paced game that if you turn your head for a second or two, you might miss a spectacular play. What I don’t like about basketball these days? The music! My son tells me it’s to pump them up before playing the competition. Seems to me, back in the day, that two teams just showing up at the same location was enough to pump them up.
Before I get too hyped up on basketball though, there are so many other things around to do. If you are a person who frequently says “There’s nothing to do!” then I would have to say you’re living under a rock. My problem is that there is so much to do, I can’t do it all! Just take a look at the Daily Sun frequently and check out local beat, club news, church news, the sports pages, and ads. There’s always something going on. And within a week or so, we’ll be adding our holiday events listing as well, which will be even more to do that I can’t find the time for.
When it seems like the pace has slowed down a little, why not go to the library, check out some books and read? There will never be enough time for me to read all the books I’d like. The other day I heard about a friend’s mother who takes a book with her everywhere, and she has been known to read books while standing in the line at Walmart.
On a cool, dreary or rainy day there’s nothing better than a feel-good book along with some hot chocolate or coffee. Having some cookies or snacks isn’t so bad either.
Before I get too carried away, let me just state that if you like to eat, then you need to mark Nov. 24 on your calendar. Lunchtime, that is. It will once again be time for the turkey spaghetti luncheon at First United Methodist Church in Corsicana. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., you can eat some of the best turkey spaghetti ever! Really! I have become a huge fan of this annual event.
Besides being able to purchase extra turkey spaghetti in pints or quarts to take home, there will also be a silent auction. Oh, and I mustn’t forget about the bazaar where you can buy some homemade goodies for your Thanksgiving holiday. Last year I bought some Fireside Coffee that Lisa Dillman made, and I will have no problem buying it again this year. However, if that particular item has already sold out, then I’m fortunate enough to now have the recipe. Thanks, Lisa!
Fireside Coffee
2 cups instant cocoa
2 cups powdered creamer
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups instant coffee
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix and put in sealed canister. Mix heaping tablespoon in hot water. Stir and enjoy!
