In the Tree House: An Everlasting Bond

Corsicana — I had the guilty pleasure of spending the weekend with two of my very dearest friends in the entire world. After twenty, yep 2-0, years of friendship with each of them, I couldn’t be more blessed to have them both in my life.

The two of them couldn’t be more different, but we all get along beautifully. I don’t have a sister, but if I did…I think these two create that whole person that would be her. I have always said that my husband is my best friend, and he truly is. He is the one that I talk to about every single thing, from the kids, to work, to just my daily activities. He is the one I share a kiss with before I fall asleep and the first smile I see every single morning; and we have a connection that is extremely rare.

But my girls, now that is a different story. I have learned over the years, I love to be around people, and that is actually how I get re-charged. Some like to curl up with a good book, some folks like to go to the movies, but me, I like to socialize. And I really try hard to get along with everybody. I realize that no two people are alike, so I make a staunch effort to accept them for whom they are, and not reject them because they may be slightly different than me, or my way of doing things.

Because if I did, then I would have no friends, right? And also if I did, then these two girls that I call “my sisters” wouldn’t be my friends either. Even though we are different on so many levels, and ways of doing things in life; at the core of it all, in our hearts and our souls we are completely the same. And I have learned that over the years, and through all my trials and tribulations in life, exactly whom I need in my life to keep me happy, secure, and grounded.

I have this kind of figurative checklist that I keep mentally locked away. So remember that,  all of my checklists are personal lists, not ones that I think the entire world should embrace. Because like I always say, my way is DEFINITELY not the right way. But I do think we should all have standards for whom we want in our lives, surrounding us, and influencing us on a daily basis.

We all know that relationships, be it marriages, partnerships, or friendships all take time, effort, and work. But when the work begins to outweigh the fun of the relationship, it is maybe time to sit back and reevaluate the situation. That is why I count my blessings every single day that I have such wonderful friends in my life; especially the ones that I have been able to maintain for more than two decades. I have three extremely close friends that fall in to this category; and from these friendships I have learned a lot, been loved a lot by each of them, and supported continuously by them. There is a connection and a bond so deep with each of them; we each know what the other is going to say, before we even think it. And that to me is the proof of a solid friendship, connection, and sisterhood.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have been blessed with so many other wonderful friends in my life. As the saying goes… “Make new friends; keep the old; one as silver and the other gold.” The reason I love that quote so much is because where your level of friends are in your life is completely up to you. You may hold a newer friend in higher accord than an older friend, but either way they are both in your life for a reason.

But I have just been fortunate enough to have been able to maintain these levels of friendship for over 20 years, and with each one of them I am able to gain a different perspective on life, and they make me a better person because of that ability. Each of them come from a different era in my life, and that is what I love; they have known me for a long time, and have been in various situations with me throughout life…and amazingly…they each still love me.

So remember to have that mental checklist of whom you want to surround yourself with on a daily basis, and you will find true friendship, and hopefully an everlasting bond.
