Corsicana —
Friday’s hot temperatures and dry conditions meant at least three grass fires erupted around the county during the afternoon. One of the largest was on West Highway 22, just outside of Corsicana near the Lone Star Cowboy Church.
Amy Lester said her family lost a barn and about 50 rolls of hay as the fire there reportedly spread to 100 acres before being contained.
“No people were hurt, and no animals were hurt so we’re OK,” Lester said about 3:30 p.m.
Navarro County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Elmer Tanner said two fires did extensive damage on different ends of the county, and another injured a man in Pelham.
As of about 4:30 Friday afternoon, 30 acres were still on fire off FM 637 near Upland Bird Country in the Mildred area. The fire was nestled in heavy brush, Tanner said, but was considered under control.
In Pelham, a one-acre fire burned right up to a home, Tanner said. A homeowner there attempted to extinguish the blaze.
“The homeowner required medical attention, but was not transported,” Tanner said.
The Pelham fire was fully contained, as was the 100-acre fire near 2010 and 2020, Tanner reported.
Lester said she and her husband live off NWCR 2020, and lease a pasture between 744 and 22. She didn’t know how the fire started, but said someone in a nearby pasture was cutting hay earlier.
The fire got to within 100 yards of their house.
“But if would have to jump the road,” she said.
Tanner and Lester praised the efforts of area volunteer fire departments who came from Navarro, Hill and Ellis counties.
“They were everywhere,” Lester said. “
The local Red Cross assisted firefighters with water and towels. Temperatures at the time were over 100 degrees.
