Celebrity waiter event benefits State Home
From Staff Reports
Local judges, business leaders, bank presidents and college deans are all lending their talents and time to help families reunite at a celebrity waiter event from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 at Napoli’s Restaurant in downtown Corsicana.
The money raised from tips to the celebrity waiters will pay to help families come visit their children at the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center, formerly the Corsicana State Home. The money is also used to buy Christmas or birthday presents, and to buy each student who lives the center a backpack to carry their belongings home and to start back to school.
Last year, the fundraiser collected more than $3,600 from celebrity waiter tips and donations from the community.
“This annual event is sponsored by the Community Resource Council for the Corsicana State Home (Corsicana Residential Treatment Center), which is a non-profit volunteer organization that provides services to the local TYC youth,” said Sandra Willard, community relations coordinator for the Corsicana Residential Treatment Center. “It is our largest fundraiser of the year.”
The local celebrities who have committed to wait tables this year are: County Judge H.M. Davenport; Economic Development Director Lee McCleary; Navarro Regional Hospital C.E.O. Xavier Villarreal; County Tax Assessor Russell Hudson; Corsicana Municipal Judge James Lagomarsino; Corsicana Independent School District administrator Danzell Lee; Texas Workforce Commission Director Stuart Schoppert; Community National Bank President Kim Wyatt; Deans Larry Weaver, Sherri Short, and Brad Richardson from Navarro College; Ellen Block of Navarro County United Way; and business owners Don Tekell, Bill Spae, Dick Martin, and Brent Magness. Also, Rick Lamb, Father Ed Monk, Rev. B. F. Risinger, Dr. Mark Luera, Rev. Tony Neal and Rev. Earnest Betts from local churches will assist with the event. Dr. Pete McElroy and , Dr. Scott Barham have also joined this group. TYC administrators who will participate include: past superintendent of the treatment center Rebecca Thomas Cox; current superintendent, Laura Braly; Assistant Superintendent Jeff Berry; and Alan Walters who works at TYC Central Office in the agency’s Residential Services Division. Additional entertainment will be provided by local singing celebrities Zanada Talley Schoppert and Janet Martin.
“Remember — be kind to all of these great people, this may be their first try at waiting table,” said Willard.
TYC provides for the rehabilitation of the most chronic or serious young offenders in Texas. The Corsicana Residential Treatment Center houses TYC’s Mental Health Crisis Stabilization Unit and provides specialized treatment to youth who have low functioning mental health or emotional disturbance treatment needs.
