Film comes to Corsicana

Independent films shoot on location around town

An Independent short film recently shot a few scenes in downtown Corsicana. On July 17 and 18, Tapestry Filmscapes out of Dallas filmed scenes in the old, once-condemned storage building at 110 South Commerce.

“Party Girl” a ‘70s-style slasher wrapped up with a little help from locals.

Patrick Martin, assistant director and executive producer of ‘Party Girl’, said they are looking to bring at least three or four more short films to town.

“The scenes filmed in Corsicana are in the middle of the film,” Martin said “I grew up in the area and there many great locations to shoot. I have already arranged to have my next untitled project filmed in Watkins Park and we also plan to shoot scenes of ‘Brooklyn’ by Stacey Nelson in Corsicana.” Three newcomers to the industry from Corsicana will be participating in the upcoming shoot — Ashley Bell and Michelle Anderson of Corsicana along with Andreå Hardisty from Saginaw.

Martin said he will have open casting calls which can also bring big revenue to small towns.

“We had an open casting call in Whiteright, Texas, and sales jumped 300 percent. People came from all over to audition, including from Bohnam, Denison and even Oklahoma. It brought business to the shops, restaurants and hotels. We could do the same thing in Corsicana.”

Despite being called small budgets, independent films can sometimes cost up to $1 million dollars to make.

“We are always looking for sponsors and we do get incentives from the Texas Film Commission for filming in rural areas such as Corsicana,” Martin said.

The latest project, “Party Girl,” is based on a short story written by Dustin LaValley and directed by Jayson Densman. It stars Tom Young and Candace Porter as the fed-up party girl. Jackie “The Texas Snake Man” Bibby was also on location to wrangle the cobra and Romanian python involved in filming. Victims included John Lawson of Raw Dog Publications and Bob Ingram. Jim Frederick, Todd Jones and Cody Berry assisted with locations.

“We plan to premiere the film in Corsicana, I have talked with the Palace Theater and a couple of live bands who seem to be on board,” Martin said. “This could bring exposure to the town, and once other independents find out about this place, the big budgets are sure to follow.”

Corsicana is seeking a “Film Friendly” designation from the State of Texas. At Tuesday’s city council meeting, an item to set up a new film ordinance was tabled, and sent back for more specifics. The ultimate goal is to bring big budget features to Corsicana, however, independents are already coming here and have plans to return.
