July 9

American Legion Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 4 p.m. at the Legion Post at 632 North Beaton Street. All officers are asking members to remember to bring their best recipes for the upcoming cookbook. Also be sure to bring coupons for military families overseas. Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will hold its monthly packing meeting at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome. They will be featuring sports equipment to send to the military. Donations of equipment can be dropped off daily between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Anyone having a family member leaving for overseas duty is asked to drop off their information. A monthly box will be sent to them. For more information, call Jean O’Connor at (903) 851-2560.



Local author Byron “Putt” Riddle will be signing copies of his two murder mysteries, “Zero Tolerance,” and its sequel, “Just Greed/Not Lust” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bookstack, 1427 West Second Avenue in Corsicana.



July 11

Help the abused and neglected children of Navarro County by becoming a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocates (“CASA”). A CASA volunteer conducts interviews, reviews all records involving the child’s case and makes reports to the court regarding the best interest of the child. A 30 hour training will begins July 11, 2011. For more information, please contact Shannon Dunn with CASA at (903) 872-3772.



Piecemakers’ Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Westhill Church of Christ. The business meeting will start at 10 a.m. The program this month will be a demonstration by Brenda Metz on a “quilt-as-you-go” technique that might be helpful in completing a community quilt project. For the demo, bring a block or piece of fabric at least eight inches square with batting and backing at least two inches larger all around than the top piece. This will be a workday, so bring your project and you can work on it after lunch at sit–n-sew. The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its County Executive Committee Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Republican headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in downtown Corsicana. Party Chair Frank Steed will hold a workshop to implement the Ellis County precinct zone organization plan presented at the previous meeting, to Get-0ut-The-Vote for the 2012 election. A social time will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. saluting local elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican Women. All registered voters are welcome to attend. Bazette-Prairie Point Cemetery Association  will be holding its annual picnic on the cemetery grounds at noon on Saturday, July 16. All guests are invited to bring their favorite covered dishes and lawn chairs.

Barry Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Barry Methodist Church. Josh Tackett, the newly appointed Navarro County District Clerk, will be the speaker. Light refreshments will follow. Everybody is invited.

The Warehouse Living Arts Center Theatre will open the family-friendly musical comedy, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” on Thursday, July 21, at 7:30 p.m. Perfect entertainment for the entire family, the story and music explores the lives of Charlie Brown and the “Peanuts” gang. The show runs July 21 to July 30. Evening performances on July 21, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29, 30 begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee on July 24 begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are now on sale at the Warehouse Living Arts Center. July 23

Corsicana Police Officers Wives’ Auxiliary are hosting “Back the Blue,” a motorcycle ride beginning with registration at 10 a.m., and kick-stands up at 11 a.m. at I.O.O.F. Park, 1400 N. 45th St., Corsicana. Registration is $20 per bike or car, and the group will ride through Navarro County ending at Harbor Inn Restaurant on Richland Chambers Lake. July 25

Not-for-profit agencies board member training, “Give, Get or Get Off: What in the World is a Board Member Supposed to Do?” will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, 312 N. 13th St. in Corsicana. Registration is $10, payable to the United Way of Navarro County. Professor Gaynor Yancey of Baylor University’s School of Social Work will conduct the training, which will include topics such as “Roles and Purposes of Executive Directors and Board Members” and lack of focus during meetings.     Most men are content if they live this life and have a loving family to show for it, or a thriving business.
    Don Woodcock has both — but he has something else to show for a big portion of his life.
    On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
    All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.

    As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
    Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29.

    The countywide Clean Up Day is being held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, not until 2 p.m. as previously announced.
