Texas First Lady visits Corsicana today

Corsicana — Corsicana is on the itinerary as First Lady Anita Perry joins the Texas Historical Commission (THC) for the Texas Main Street Program’s First Lady’s Tour. The tour is an annual event celebrating Texas Main Street cities.

The public is invited to attend a special reception for Perry at the Palace Theatre beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Main Street Program.

The tour will welcome the new Texas Main Street cities of Wills Point and Eagle Pass, which is re-entering the program. This year’s tour will also include two cities celebrating important Main Street anniversaries: Corsicana with 25 years and Denton with 20 years in the program. The schedule includes stops on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in Eagle Pass from 10:15–11:30 a.m. and Corsicana from 1:30–2:45 p.m. The tour continues on Thursday, Feb. 11 in Denton from 10:30–11:45 a.m. and Wills Point from 1–2:15 p.m. Each city will also host a brief media reception with the First Lady at the close of her visit.

“I have a special fondness for the Main Street Program because it shows the community’s pride and appreciation for its roots and history,” Mrs. Perry said. “Having grown up in a small town, I know firsthand the importance of a thriving downtown. I’ve had the honor of visiting more than 30 Main Street towns and it’s always a thrill to see the enthusiasm in these communities.”

The Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) sponsors the 2010 First Lady’s Tour.

“For the past 16 years, IBAT has been proud to sponsor the First Lady’s Main Street Tour,” said IBAT President and CEO Chris Williston. “We are proud of our community banks, the Main Street banks, that help our local communities and Main Street businesses thrive and prosper.”

Accompanying Mrs. Perry will be THC Chairman Jon T. Hansen of El Paso, along with several THC commissioners, IBAT representatives, THC Executive Director Mark Wolfe, Deputy Executive Director Dr. Terry Colley and other THC staff. Mrs. Perry will give remarks at each celebration and a public reception follows the ceremony.

“We are grateful to Mrs. Perry for joining us on these tours during her time as First Lady,” said Hansen. “These cities celebrate their local heritage by committing to revitalize their historic downtowns through the Main Street model and exemplify the THC’s brand of “Real Places Telling Real Stories.”

Since the Texas Main Street Program’s founding in 1981, each First Lady of Texas has participated in this event, becoming a traditional honor for new Main Street cities.

The THC’s Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program for historic downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. Today, there are 86 official Texas Main Street programs representing more than 2.6 million citizens. The programs are in cities and commercial neighborhood districts of all sizes, ranging from less than 1,000 to more than 220,000, throughout Texas. Over time, Texas Main Street communities have realized more than $2 billion in economic reinvestment, the creation of more than 25,000 local jobs and the expansion or creation of more than 6,400 businesses in their Main Street districts. These reinvestments show that significant economic development impact can be realized through historic preservation.
