Corsicana —
Camp Wanica, which is owned by the YMCA in Corsicana, got some top help from Larry Morrison at McKee Lumber earlier this summer.
The Lodge, bathhouse and the caretaker’s house all had damaged roofs following the hail from last year, and this past spring’s storms compounded the problem.
Frank Cook started working as caretaker at the camp this past spring.
“We just started putting out buckets when it leaked,” he said. “It leaked for close to a year, then it got hit really bad in the April storms that came through.”
The camp had insurance, but it didn’t cover the losses, according to Terry Seth, executive director for the YMCA Corsicana.
“With the age of the roofs and the deductibles, it wouldn’t have covered nearly what it cost to replace all that stuff,” Seth said. “Some of those roofs were probably 25 years old. The insurance covered the labor.”
Morrison contacted TAMKO Building Products, and got shingles donated to the project.
“It’s unbelievable,” Seth said. “He helps so many people in our community.”
The roofers came out on Fridays, so as not to interfere with the YMCA’s day camps.
“It worked out perfectly,” Seth said. “Our camps are going strong.”
In addition to the day camps, Camp Wanica will also host Camp of the Rising Sun in August.
