Chamber to host political forum tonight

Corsicana — With the start of early voting for the November election less than a week away, interest and attention is focusing on the local, state and national races that will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot.

The Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce will put local candidates in the spotlight Tuesday when it presents a “Candidates Forum” at the Corsicana Government Center. The event will start at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

Featured in the forum will be the five contested Navarro County races — treasurer, district clerk, Precinct 3 justice of the peace, and the Precinct 2 and 4 county commissioner seats. All 10 candidates in those five races have been invited to participate, said Paul Hooper, executive director of the chamber.

Candidates scheduled to appear, listed alphabetically:

County Treasurer — Ruby Coker (D-incumbent) and Frank Hull (R).

District Clerk — Marilyn Greer (D-incumbent) and Joe Hobbs (R).

Pct. 3 J.P. — Stan Farmer (D) and Jackie Freeland (R).

Pct. 2 Commissioner — Nathan Carter (D) and Dick Martin (R).

Pct. 4 Commissioner — James Olsen (R-incumbent) and Sherman Putman (D).

Kerri-Anderson Donica will serve as MC for the event, asking questions of each candidate. Questions for the panels will be screened by Connie Hickman and Chuck McClanahan, and passed along to Donica to submit to the panel.

Audience members will be able to submit questions to be asked of the candidates in the various races, Hooper said. While “live” radio coverage of the event will not be available, KAND Radio will be providing a “tape delayed” broadcast of the forum following a Tuesday evening sports program broadcast, Hooper said.

On a related political coverage note, today the Daily Sun begins its coverage of the local, contested races with a “Candidates Q&A” feature. In today’s edition, candidates for treasurer, justice of the peace, and district clerk will be profiled in a “Q&A” format. On Sunday, Oct. 17, candidates for the two commissioner seats up for election — Pct. 2 and 4 — will be featured, along with the candidates for State Representative District 8.

Lists of polling places, and a composite sample ballot listing for the Nov. 2 election will also begin appearing in the Daily Sun this week, and continue to appear frequently through election day.
