Blooming Grove’s July 4 parade will be held downtown at 11 a.m. Awards will be presented for the best floats and most patriotic home or yard decor. Following the parade, there will be an Independence Day celebration in the city park honoring all veterans of the U.S. Military. The City of Rice will hold Fourth of July festivities at Mike Dickens Memorial Park, beginning at 4 p.m. Activities include picnicking, a 28-foot high water slide, a watermelon eating contest and a pie-making contest. Fireworks will take place about 9 p.m. The city will also honor two fallen Rice soldiers with a dedication and plaque erections for Tim Guana (Navy, killed in the October 2000 USS Cole bombing) and William O’Brien (Army, killed in Iraq in March 2008).
The Chatfield Cemetery Association will hold its Homecoming Picnic and Annual Meeting beginning at noon at the Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share. The Annual Business Meeting will be held following the meal. Donations will be accepted for the maintenance and upkeep of the Old and New Chatfield Cemeteries.

The Corsicana Rotary Club will present its annual Freedom Festival from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the I.O.O.F. Park in Corsicana. In addition to a professional fireworks show, the event will feature water bounce houses, a live band playing music from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, vendors, and a patriotic medley of music. Food for sale will include cold watermelon, turkey legs, hamburgers, hot dogs and snow cones. The event is free, and people are urged to bring their own lawn chairs. Overflow parking is available at Tiger Stadium.

Former players reunite to pay tribute to Woodcock

Don Woodcock has both — but he has something else to show for a big portion of his life.
On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives. -
Early voting enters second week
As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29. -
