KERENS - The First Baptist Church of Kerens will celebrate the first service in its new sanctuary on Feb. 12, with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. that same day.
It’s been two years and three months since a devastating fire took the former church on that same site in Kerens.
In addition to the open house, the church will have a dedication service at 10 a.m. on March 25, with former church personnel returning to be part of the celebration.
The church architect is Ron Mabry and the contractor is Jacobe Brothers Construction, both from the Tyler area.
Since the fire, the congregation has been meeting for Sunday school in the church’s education wing, which was mostly spared, while church services are at the Kerens Ex Students Association building in downtown Kerens.
Although the building was insured, rebuilding was more expensive than the insurance would cover, and the church is still trying to raise the difference of about $250,000. Fundraising to meet this challenge has been through various small efforts, and includes a newly-published cook book. To make a donation or to buy a copy of the First Baptist Church of Kerens’ cookbook, mail checks to P.O. Box 219, Kerens, TX. 75144, or call the church at (903) 396-2342.
