Feb. 1

Kinsloe House hosts its program luncheon which will feature Sgt. Ken Authier of the Texas Highway Patrol who will be giving the program “R U Payin’ Attention?” He will be making those in attendance more aware of the rules of the road — signs, speed limits, etc. Donna Ingham is chairman of the Furnishings Committee which sponsors the program. Other members of the committee are Linda Fannin, Cecilia Alexander, Shirley Barnes, Kathryn Corley, Carolyn French, Corinne Lee, Jan Moore, Edna Richardson, Ruth Scott, Jo Skews, Linda Steely and Carlene Woolf. Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Primary elections are currently scheduled for April 4, and all candidates running for a political office in Precinct 2, Precinct 3 and countywide are invited to attend this meeting. Each will be given a few minutes to speak to the voters. The public is urged to attend, and refreshments will be served.



Feb. 2

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Robert Vickery, candidate for District 8 State Representative. Everyone is welcome, and light refreshments will be served.

American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 12 noon to  5:30 p.m. Those in need of blood often include accident or trauma victims, premature babies, cancer patients, as well as people undergoing surgeries. Those in need can be your friend, your sibling, your classmate, your teacher or just about anyone else in your life. To make an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org. All blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Mary Peterson’s Child Care Center will host a Soul Food Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Located at 1103 E. Collin, there will be to go plates available for $10 donation. One choice of meat from pork chitterling, barbecue sausage, barbecue chicken or pig feet; two choice of vegetables between yams, greens, macaroni and cheese, or pea salad; and one dessert from the choice of peach cobbler or cake.  The Warehouse Living Arts Center Theatre will present “The Last Romance” opening Thursday, Jan. 26.  The first show of the 2012 Season is a wonderful heart-warming comedy by Joe diPietro featuring WLAC favorites Ron Motley, Debbie Hanks, Norma Russell and Randy Jones.  Production dates are Jan. 26 to 29, 31, Feb. 2 to 4. Richland Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual chili supper starting at 5 p.m. at the Fire Station/Civic Center on Main Street in Richland. The supper will be free of charge, donations will be accepted. Entertainment by Walker Creek Karaoke and we will raffle a country wood cooler box provided by Loran Vyers with Walker Creek Wood Crafts. Feb. 5

Mike Fossum, NASA astronaut and husband of the former Melanie London, will speak at 1 p.m. in the Great Hall of First United Methodist Church. Fossum will speak about his recent six-month stay aboard the International Space Station, where he served first as Flight Engineer and then as Commander. Prior to this flight, Mike had logged more than 636 hours in space, including more than 42 hours in six EVAs (spacewalks), as a mission specialist aboard space shuttle Discovery on STS-121 (July 4-17, 2006) and STS-124 (May 31-June 14, 2008). Mike is a retired Colonel from the USAF Reserves.

A “Reagan Day Dinner” will be held by the Republican Party of Navarro County at 6 p.m. at Napoli’s Pizza and Restaurant, 111 E. Collin Ave. Colton Buckley, Coryell County Young Republicans Chairman and Central Texas TEA Party Young Patriots Coordinator will be the keynote speaker. It will be an chance to meet the Republican Primary Election candidates from Navarro County and multi-county District races. Each will have an opportunity to address the gathering. The Chatfield/Tupelo Neighborhood Crime Watch will hold its first meeting of the year at 7 p.m. at the Chatfield Community Center. All candidates who are running for political offices in Precinct 1 or for countywide offices are invited to come speak at the meeting. All candidates will have a few minutes to address the voters regarding their qualifications for the offices they are seeking. A short business meeting will be held following the program. Refreshments will be served. Candidates are invited to remain for a while in order to give voters an opportunity to visit and ask any questions they might have for any of the candidates.



Feb. 10

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will hold a Valentine Sweethearts Recognition and Fundraiser from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the MLK Center. Special recognition will be given to couples together for 50 years and more. Performers at the event include The Gospel Five and others. There will be snacks and socializing. Donation is $5. Tickets are available from Tinnis Manning, Darlene Jackson, Marshall and Ruby Williams, Gaylan Thomas, and at the door.



Feb. 11

Barry Methodist Church and Barry Friends of Youth will host a chili supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at Barry Methodist Church. On the menu are chili, soup, cornbread, crackers, fritos, condiments, tea and dessert, all for the low price of $6 for adults, $3 for children. To-Go trays are available. There will be a silent auction from 5 to 6:15 p.m. with all proceeds to help the kids of Barry and their projects at the Navarro County Youth Exposition Sale and Auction on March 24. Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will host the second in a three part series on Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The presentation will be 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, with Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization as the speaker. What are the differences between Alzheimer’s, other dementias and normal memory loss due to aging? This is a good overview for those who have concerns about memory loss or have had a diagnosis of dementia, as well as for those who want information about Alzheimer’s disease. Learn about the Alzheimer’s disease process, and the programs offered by the Greater Dallas Chapter for both the person with Alzheimer’s and the caregiver.

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade,  2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The Woman’s Club House Association invites the Kinsloe House members and their guests to meet Feb. 15 for a program luncheon presented by the Young People’s Committee. Tom Wilson will be the guest speaker for the event. Wilson, a current board member of the Navarro County Humane Society, will update his audience on the current, new, and upcoming animal shelter buildings. Wilson will also have president of the Humane Society, Julie Maupin, and the director of the Animal Shelter Katy Watkins to help in his presentation. Jenna Hall is chairman of the Young People’s Committee, along with Neoma Allen, Marsha Banks, Carolyn Blackburn, Kay Hicks and Daun Wilson assisting. Navarro Regional Hospital Senior Circle will hold the last in a three part series about Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Navarro Regional Hospital Dining Room, and Kimberly Knight of the Greater Dallas Alzheimer’s Organization will be the speaker. Know the 10 signs:  Early Detection Matters, will be the topic of this program. Learn the warning signs that may be symptoms of Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.  Understand the importance of visiting your doctor early to rule out treatable conditions that may be the cause of these symptoms.  Early diagnosis helps with planning, treatment, the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and access to support from the Alzheimer's Association.

VOICE will have the 8th Annual Spring Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at The Cook Center.  This annual fundraiser for VOICE will include lunch, a silent auction, the presentation of the Gioia Keeney Service to Children Award, and guest speaker comedienne Leslie Norris Townsend.  This is a fun way to spend lunch on the Thursday before Derrick Days.  Sponsorships and tables go on sale on Jan. 10, contact Gina Dieterichs at VOICE for more information (903) 872-180 or gdieterichs@voiceinc.org.



The Navarro Council of the Arts and VOICE Inc will have the Third Annual Mystery in Tuckertown Mystery Art Auction at 5:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Living Arts Gallery.  Local art will be on display and for sale by silent auction bids.  Enjoy viewing, bidding, and food and drinks.     On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
    All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.

  • Early voting enters second week

    As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
    Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29.

    The countywide Clean Up Day is being held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, not until 2 p.m. as previously announced.
