Corsicana —
Corsicana High School’s Musical Theater Department will open “West Side Story” at 8 p.m. Friday, with a second showing at 8 p.m. Saturday.
“West Side Story” is a modern day adaptation of the timeless classic “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. They both involve two young people that fall in love, but are kept apart by their friends and families.
The show will feature live music, singing, acting and dancing by many C.H.S. school groups. The leading roles will be performed by Danny Phillips as Tony, Ana Garcia as Maria, Tiano McDonald as Bernardo, Evan Fitts as Riff, Alexandra Martinez as Anita, and Jacory Sanders as Chino.
The CHS staff including Mike Huffstetler, choral director; Blade Healey, theater arts director; Amy Tidwell, Calico/dance director; Jonathan Dixon, journalism/photo instructor; and Tracey Abel, fine arts coordinator, have worked hard to help students put together this production for the community.
“The auditions for the show were open to anyone in high school who wanted to audition,” said Tidwell. “We’ve got some wonderfully talented students who have put a lot into this production.”
Tickets may be purchased in advance, or at the door prior to the show. Ticket prices are $5 per student, $10 per adult; $15 for reserved section seats. The production will be in the Corsicana High School Auditorium.

Local economy shows signs of growth

Texas’ most recent unemployment figures, from April, had the state at 6.4 percent unemployed, this is compared with the national average of 7.6 percent. In addition, state sales tax receipts for May 2013 were nearly 8 percent higher than in May 2012. Sales tax collections have increased for 38 consecutive months, boosted by strong business spending in the oil/natural gas and manufacturing sectors, and to some extent, retail sales, according to the Texas Comptroller’s office. -

City grants tax abatements
The Corsicana City Council granted tax abatements to Guardian Industries and the proposed water park when the group met in regular session Tuesday. Both companies will be given 50 percent abatements for 10 years, and both are proposing sizable investments and the creation of dozens of new jobs.
