May 14

Navarro County Retired School Employees Association will meet at 11 a.m. for a catered luncheon at Northwest Apartments Community Center, 1360 N. 13th St. The program will be an installation of officers and remarks from Carolyn Vardeman, District XII president. Decorations and door prizes will be furnished by the executive committee. Dues for the new year will be taken. All members are encouraged to attend this special meeting.



May 14-15

Relay for Life of Navarro County will be held from 7 p.m. May 14 to 7 a.m. May 15 at Lake Halbert Park. Fun, food, and entertainment will be held all night long. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. For more information, contact Tammy Broome at (903) 872-3931.



May 14-16

Freedom Riders will present three days of fun beginning at 7:30 p.m. May 14 and continuing until May 16. There will be a fish fry, barbecue and a trail ride to be hosted in Emhouse. Bring tents and plan on a weekend of fun for the entire family. Admission will be free, but donations will be welcomed as all proceeds go to Blooming Grove FFA. May 15

Pickett Riding Club will have its first show (buckle series) at 2 p.m. at the outdoor arena in Streetman. There will be 6 and under, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 and over. There will be cloverleaf and straightaway barrels, flag race, speed race, potato race, poles and keyhole. Cost will be $2 exhibition and $4 event. Negative coggins required. Kerens Riding Club will have a ranch rodeo and dance beginning at 7 p.m. at the Kerens Riding Club arena, located five miles south on State Highway 309, off State Highway 31, Kerens. Ten four-man teams will compete in five events: mugging, trailer loading, doctoring, branding and wild cow milking. Admission will be $5; children 6 and under will be admitted free. A benefit fund-raiser and auction will be held for Johnnie B. McLain from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Union High Fire Station, located on Farm-to-Market Road 638, .02 miles east of intersection FM 642 and FM 638. Cost will be $10 per person. All other donations accepted. Everyone is invited to attend this medical benefit for McLain, a local farmer and cowboy. Entertainment will be provided. A cowboy auction will follow the meal. Corbet/Oak Valley Volunteer Fire Department will have its semi-annual fund-raiser at the Corsicana VFW, located at Veterans Drive off West State Highway 31. A barbecue dinner with all the trimmings will be served beginning at 5 p.m. Following dinner, Zanada Tally Schoppert and Against the Wind will entertain with music. Later in the evening, there will be a dessert auction. Tickets for admission and dinner is $10 each with children 10 and under $5 each. Children under 21 are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. You are invited to come out and support the Corbet/Oak Valley VFD.



Emhouse 4-H will have an animal clinic from 10 a.m. to noon at Emhouse Community Center. There will be heart worm and rabies shots. The clinic will be for cats, dogs and horses. For more information, call (903) 851-5792.

Hopewell Cemetery Association will have its annual meeting at 11 a.m. at Navarro City Hall. This is a change in meeting place, due to tree damage. Bill Young will be the guest speaker. Barry Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at Barry Baptist Church. Charles Paul, a deputy with the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department, will be the speaker. Everyone is invited. Light refreshments will be served.

Shakers and Scrapers is a very diverse group with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities. The club holds and annual car show during Derrick Days in support of a charity that needs help. American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St., invites everyone to the legion’s second annual brisket/spare rib cook-off and a jackpot bean contest. Registration will begin at noon May 21. Entry fee will be $40 per team and $10 entry fee for the jackpot bean contest. Judging will be held at noon May 22. There will be a shuffleboard tournament April 22. Boys and Girls Club of Navarro County will host a bowl-a-thon from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Corsicana Super Bowl, 2801 W. Seventh Ave. The fund-raiser will help pay for supper day camp for local children. To host a team will cost $250 and anyone wanting to have a team, but doesn’t wish to bowl can sponsor a team of children eager to pick up their spares. Pelham activities will include beautification of graves at 9:30 a.m., a program at 10:45 a.m. at the church, a Historical Marker dedication of Pelham High School at 11:45 a.m., with lunch to follow. Barry Volunteer Fire Department will have a barbecue dinner fund-raiser at Barry Methodist Church. The dinner will be from 5 to 7 p.m., an auction and a 50/50 raffle drawing at 7 p.m. Dinner will be brisket, chicken, sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, dessert and drink at $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Dawg Days of Summer chili cook-off will be held at Gander Mountain, 3301 Corsicana Crossing Blvd., benefiting the Humane Society of Navarro County. Cook-off categories and entry fees are as follows: 50/50 beans, $10, (run in at noon); junior chili (ages 8 to 17), $10 (turn in 2 p.m.), chili grind only; CASI chili, $20 (turn in at 2 p.m.), chili grind only. There will be a pet contest at 10 a.m. with the following categories: smallest, biggest, best dressed, best trick, and owner/pet lookalike. Also, Bill McFarlin from CBS’ reality show “Greatest American Dog” will be there along with his brittany Star and her companions Maggie and Lucille. There will incredible demonstrations of agility and obedience and pet tricks. There will also be a raffle. Dawson Saddle Club playday series will be held the Dawson arena, located on State Highway 31, Dawson. Dates are May 22, June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, Aug. 14 and 28, Sept. 11 and 25. Must be member of club or pay a one time award fee of $15 per contestant. Family membership is $25, single is $15 per year. Auditions for Norma Russell’s newest musical comedy, “Circus Shambles,” will be at 2 p.m. at the Warehouse Living Arts Center, 119 W. Sixth Ave., with 12 featured roles available for six men and six women (late teens and adults), and numerous chorus members (any age over 12 years old as long as you can sing). Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 bars of an upbeat song and dress to move. There will also be cold readings from the script. Rehearsals will begin on June 1. Performance dates will be July 22-25, 27, 29-31. “Circus Shambles” tells the story of a small struggling circus that is in danger of having to “fold its tent.” The bearded lady’s hair is falling out, the fat lady is losing weight, the lion tamer’s lion is in hock for an unpaid feed bill, and the circus ringmaster/owner is resistant to change that could possibly be their salvation. Hubbard Memorial Day Weekend Celebration will take place in Hubbard, sponsored by the Hubbard Chamber of Commerce. A rodeo will be held at 8 p.m. May 29 and 2 p.m. May 30 at the Mooney Holloway Arena, located on State Highway 31. Other events will include: May 29 — breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. at Hubbard Fire Station, Historic Hubbard High School open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and sales, vendors, food booths, barbecue cook-off contest and shopping opportunities throughout the day; May 31 — parade at 11 a.m. in downtown Hubbard, memorial service at noon at Fairview Cemetery, and annual fish fry at the fire station. Eligibility requires a GPA of 3.0 or higher, resident of Ellis, Navarro or Kaufman counties, and self-motivated individual with intent to continue their education in health care. Navarro County Branch NAACP will present its sixth annual Summerfest 2010 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bunert Park. Derrick Days Committee will host a crawfish boil from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Remington, 122 W. Third Ave. The event will include all-you-can-eat crawfish and live zydeco music by Jay-B and the Zydeco Posse for $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Free beverages will be provided. Rice Cemetery Association will meet at the Rice High School gym. The business meeting will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m. The memorial service will honor loved ones who have been buried at Rice Cemetery and those buried elsewhere since the last homecoming. A covered dish lunch will be held at noon in the Rice High School commons. For the meal, the association will provide barbecue, iced tea and bread. Please bring your favorite dish or dessert.
