July 2

Blooming Grove’s July 4 parade will be held  downtown at 11 a.m. Awards will be presented for the best floats and most patriotic home or yard decor. Following the parade, there will be an Independence Day celebration in the city park honoring all veterans of the U.S. Military. Included in the day’s events are food, music, races, cake walk, dog show, and more. For more information, call Patsy at (903)875-8273, or Jean at (903) 695-2724, or Shirley at (903) 673-2635.



The City of Rice will hold Fourth of July festivities at Mike Dickens Memorial Park, beginning at 4 p.m. Activities include picnicking, a 28-foot high water slide, a watermelon eating contest and a pie-making contest. Fireworks will take place about 9 p.m. The city will also honor two fallen Rice soldiers with a dedication and plaque erections for Tim Guana (Navy, killed in the October 2000 USS Cole bombing) and William O’Brien (Army, killed in Iraq in March 2008).



The Chatfield Cemetery Association will hold its Homecoming Picnic and Annual Meeting beginning at noon at the Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share. The Annual Business Meeting will be held following the meal. Donations will be accepted for the maintenance and upkeep of the Old and New Chatfield Cemeteries.



Cars of Navarro County is holding its monthly “Cruise-In” and meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. at Collin Street Bakery on Interstate 45 and U.S. Highway 287. All donations of non-perishable food items or cash to directly to the Navarro County Food Pantry. All people and vehicles are invited to attend. For more information, call (214) 418-5775.



July 4

The Corsicana Rotary Club will present its annual Freedom Festival from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the I.O.O.F. Park in Corsicana. In addition to a professional fireworks show, the event will feature water bounce houses, a live band playing music from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, vendors, and a patriotic medley of music. Food for sale will include cold watermelon, turkey legs, hamburgers, hot dogs and snow cones. The event is free, and people are urged to bring their own lawn chairs. Overflow parking is available at Tiger Stadium.



Chatfield Volunteer Fire Department and Chatfield United Methodist Church are sponsoring a July 4 parade as a fundraiser toward a new truck for the fire department. Entry fee for the parade is $10 — decorate your car, truck, tractor, 4-wheeler or any vehicle and participate. Hot dogs and drinks will also be available for purchase. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m. at Chatfield U



Long Prairie Cemetery Association will have its annual meeting to conduct business and elect officers at noon at the cemetery site at Rural Shade. All who plan to attend should bring a lawn chair and ice water.



July 5

Oak Valley Crime Watch will meet this month at 6 p.m. at the Oak Valley Community Room, 2211 Oak Valley Lane, for a special night of Bingo. Join them for a belated Happy Birthday America celebration. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a side dish or dessert, plus a small gift for the Bingo games. Navarro County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance will meet at 7 p.m. each Tuesday, in the Fellowship Hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St., Corsicana. All are welcome to learn to give and receive support at the weekly meetings. On the first Tuesday of the month, Dr. Tom Sheriff, licensed psychologist, conducts a study of “The Depression and Manic Depression Workbook: A Guide for Living with Depression and Manic Depression.” For more information, call (903) 872-6302, or (903) 874-6815.



July 6

Eureka Crime Watch will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Eureka United Methodist Church. Special guest will be Chief Deputy Mike Cox from the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served



July 7

Blooming Grove Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Fire Station. The speaker will be Navarro County Tax Assessor/Collector Russell Hudson. Light refreshments will be served, and everyone is welcome to attend.



The American Red Cross will conduct its monthly blood drive from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Martin Hall at First United Methodist Church in Corsicana. Identification are required at check-in. Donors must be in general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 with completed Parental Consent Form). July 9

American Legion Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 4 p.m. at the Legion Post at 632 North Beaton Street. All officers are asking members to remember to bring their best recipes for the upcoming cookbook. Also be sure to bring coupons for military families overseas. Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will hold its monthly packing meeting at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome. They will be featuring sports equipment to send to the military. Donations of equipment can be dropped off daily between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Anyone having a family member leaving for overseas duty is asked to drop off their information. July 11

The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its County Executive Committee Meeting at 7 p.m. at the Republican headquarters at 111-B West Third Avenue in downtown Corsicana. Party Chair Frank Steed will hold a workshop to implement the Ellis County precinct zone organization plan presented at the previous meeting, to Get-0ut-The-Vote for the 2012 election. A social time will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. saluting local elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican Women. All registered voters are welcome to attend. Corsicana Police Officers Wives’ Auxiliary are hosting “Back the Blue,” a motorcycle ride beginning with registration at 10 a.m., and kick-stands up at 11 a.m. at I.O.O.F. Park, 1400 N. 45th St., Corsicana. Registration is $20 per bike or car, and the group will ride through Navarro County ending at Harbor Inn Restaurant on Richland Chambers Lake. July 25

Not-for-profit agencies board member training, “Give, Get or Get Off: What in the World is a Board Member Supposed to Do?” will be offered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, 312 N. 13th St. in Corsicana. Registration is $10, payable to the United Way of Navarro County. Professor Gaynor Yancey of Baylor University’s School of Social Work will conduct the training, which will include topics such as “Roles and Purposes of Executive Directors and Board Members” and lack of focus during meetings.     Don Woodcock has both — but he has something else to show for a big portion of his life.
    On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
    All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.

    As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
    Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29.
