AirSho features flying history

Coyote Squadron big event coming May 14

Corsicana — This year’s AirSho, an annual display and celebration of the Coyote Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, will be different from the 12 previous annual shows. This year, the airport will be closed to general aviation during the show, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and the ramp will be cleared of people and secured.

The change is because the Federal Aviation Administration has OK’d the airport to waive standard air regulations over the airport during that time. So, while it will prevent visitors from walking right up to the airplanes during the show, it will also liberate the pilots for more demonstrations. Gates open at 9:30 a.m., and the aircraft will be available for viewing up close until 11:30 a.m.

The AirSho is hosted by the Coyote Squadron, the Corsicana unit of the Commemorative Air Force. Cost of admission is $5 per person, or $10 per car. Veterans and active-duty military personnel and their families are admitted free as thanks for their service.

Flight of the Phoenix Escadrille is three friends in T-6 Texans. They will demonstrate formation flying in these powerful trainers that have been, and are still, used to train fighter pilots.

Two flying clubs, Falcon Flight (flying RVs) and Texas V-Tails (flying Beechcraft), will demonstrate formation flying. Formation flying requires pilots to maintain the same altitude and airspeed as other aircraft in the formation, even those with different-sized engines.

The aircraft flown by Falcon Flight are called RVs. They are kit-built airplanes designed by Richard VanGrunsven, and they are fully aerobatic. John Shetterly will be there to show visitors just how aerobatic the his RV-8 can be. In addition, Jan Collmer will be there with his Extra 300L, an airplane built in Germany in 1994. He and his Extra will do tricks for the audience. Randy Henderson fills out the aerobatic trio with his Texas T-Cart, a Taylorcraft built in 1946 but highly modified since.

There will be many other aircraft to see in action and on the ground including the Vietnam era UH -1 “Huey” helicopter, a Soviet Mi-2 helicopter, a CJ-6 Chinese trainer, and a Cessna O-2 (a twin-engine aircraft with one engine in front of the fuselage and another–a “pusher” engine–behind it. The O-2 was used by forward air controllers to direct air strikes called in to support troops on the ground, and by forward observers to direct artillery fires. There will be an L-19, an observation aircraft that preceded the O-2, and another, even earlier predecessor, the L-5.

Visitors will also see the Coyote Squadron’s own PT-19, a primary trainer like the aircraft flown for flight training at what is now the Corsicana airport, and its predecessor, a Stearman PT-17, a pre-war biplane.

At noon, two radio-controlled aircraft clubs — Texas Heat Wave and the Corsicana Miniature Aircraft Club — will demonstrate their skills and their airplanes. Look for the flying lawnmower.

Bringing to Corsicana an air show such as this is expensive. The cost of aviation fuel has gone up along with the price of gasoline. The Coyote Squadron acknowledges, and is grateful to, its many sponsors Orkin, The Downtown Spa, Action Powersports, and Casita Enterprises, Mayor C.L. “Buster” Brown III, Oil City Iron Works, Budget Bail Bonds, and a few members of the Coyote Squadron.

Other sponsors include Navarro Community Foundation, Chris McKeown Investments, Pumping Services of Palestine, TLH Enterprises (Colortyme), Carlos Encarnacion, Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, Navarro Regional Hospital, Community National Bank (the J. Tom Eady Charitable Trust), City National Bank, Watkins Construction, Stewart Toyota, Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, Hall Volvo-GMC of Tyler, Tejas Restoration & Roofing, Carl White's Autoplex, Chris Halley, Haynie Drilling Co., Corsicana Sheet Metal Co., Small Engine Sales & Service, Vitters Tractors, Corsicana Bedding, Coyote Roofing of Tyler, Guardian Industries, Pete McElroy DDS, P&S Rexall Pharmacy, Ted Southard Farm Bureau Insurance, Jones Medical Equipment, Hollingsworth & Pillans DDS, Citizens National Bank, Turbyfill's Machine Shop of Palestine, Tim’s Tires & Wheels, McKee Lumber Company, Linda Housley Insurance, Gilfillan Hardware, Insurance by Duncan, GOCO Trucking, Winters Oil Partners, Scream Communications, Berry Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, Winters Land Partners, Rylie Transports, Don's Auto Center, Photos by Robin Blake, Statham Realty, Frank Hull, Ryder Oil Company of Buffalo, Joe Baumgartner Insurance Agency, Frank Hull, 1st Choice Insurance, Jordan’s Paint & Body, Chuck's Paint & Body, United Rental and Gibson Home Center.

All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.
