Gander Mountain Hog Hunt set for Saturday

Event raising money for Big Brothers, Big Sisters

Corsicana — Hunters typically don’t need much of an excuse to get outside. Give them two good reasons, though, and it might be a guarantee they’re out in force.

Gander Mountain’s Wild Hog Charity Tournament has a double-edged benefit: it’s ridding the country side of a few more destructive beasts, and it’s helping the local Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Registration is Friday evening at the store, with check in Saturday afternoon.

“It’s the first hog hunt we’ve ever done at the store, and we’re really excited about it,” Assistant Store Manager Brenda Horn said.

The Gander Mountain Wild Hog Charity Tournament will feature two-man teams scouring the country side searching for the animals that run rampant and drive landowners crazy. The entry fee is $40 per team, and if the tournament draws 100 teams, Gander Mountain will donate $1,000 to the Corsicana Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

There will also be other cash prizes and payouts, trophies and door prizes, and participants 13 and under have a chance to win a new .22 rifle. The tournament will cap at 150 teams.

“As destructive as hogs can be in Navarro County, it should be a big hunt,” Horn said.

But contestants don’t have to hunt just in the county. They do have to follow all state laws and tournament rules, though.

Among them, hunters must use their own land, a lease, or have permission or proper permitting. As well there is a liner at the bottom of the rules page that reads: “This tournament is for charity and to have fun. If you are looking for a tournament that has a big pay out and polygraph this is not for you. If you are looking for a chance to help a good cause, come play.”

Only freshly harvested hogs will be allowed at check-in, tournament rules state, but Horn said there will be time for education: for the hogs not wanted by the hunters after check-in, Gander Mountain is hosting a processing demonstration.

“We’ll be making them into sausage,” Horn said.

If you are interested in the hunt, registration is from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the store, 3301 Corsicana Crossing at Interstate 45 and U.S. Highway 287.

If you just want to see the results and, perhaps, learn how to make sausage, check-in begins at noon and goes to 4 p.m., Saturday.
