Corsicana —
The Corsicana Gun Show at the I.O.O.F. Event Center next Saturday and Sunday will be the first public event for the facility, and is already showing promise.
All 144 booth spaces have been rented by vendors, and there’s a waiting list for the next gun show, which hasn’t even been scheduled yet. In addition to guns, the show will also feature knives, ammunition, and apparel and accessories for the non-gun-buyers.
Vendors are bringing wares from all over the state, although the show is being hosted in conjunction with Premier Gun Shows out of Dallas/Fort Worth.
“Our hopes are that if it’s successful we’ll have multiple shows a year,” explained Tina Harland, I.O.O.F. event center director.
Selling out the booth space is a good indication that it will be a good show, she said. In addition to selling weapons, the vendors will also be buying firearms from people who want to sell their pieces or trade-up.
“We know people here are interested in guns, they hunt, and we want people to be able to shop locally and not have to go to Dallas-Fort Worth,” Harland said.
Doors at the event center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, and children under the age of 12 get in free.
The center opened in October, and has already made a name for itself as far as a venue for private functions, such as weddings and banquets, even hosting the Corsicana senior prom this past spring. What Harland wants to do is take that further into business meetings, and special events like concerts.
“Corsicana has been very receptive as far as the events center goes,” she said. “We now want to increase our week-day use, for meetings and things like that.”
To help boost the day-time business, the center recently cut its rental prices for day-time events to half price.
“We want Corsicana to know our events aren’t just about weddings,” she said.
However, the half-price rates recently led one couple to decide on a Monday morning wedding.
As for the other entertainment, the center will host “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” a ‘50s themed concert in August, and Harland is working to book other types of shows in the future, ranging from country to ‘80s music.
“We want to get an array of entertainment,” she said. “The goal is to get different things.”
