Through May 5

Corsicana Police Officer Association asks everyone to support a raffle/fundraiser for the Officer Relief Fund. A Rock River M-4 rifle has been donated for the raffle by Jesse’s Gun Shop and Dr. Justin Pillans. The winner must be eligible to possess and purchase a gun. The tickets will be $5 per ticket, or $20 for five tickets. The drawing will be held May 5. To purchase tickets, contact any off-duty CPOA member, or through Jesse Bonner at Jessie’s Gun Shop.



March 26

Ellis County Master Gardener’s Lawn & Garden Expo. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Waxahachie Civic Center.



The Corsicana Girls Softball Association will be conducting sign-ups from 10 a.m. until noon at the Optimist Field.



Relay for Life is to benefit from a music festival to be held at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 515 FM 416 (southside of Richland Chambers Lake) from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. Bring lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment provided by TinTop Road, Corsicana Cloggers, Tex and Mary Schutz, Todd Jones and the Groove Tones, Zanada Talley Schoppert and Against the Wind, plus UMC ensembles. Proceeds from the booths and donations will go to the Relays out of Navarro and Freestone Counties. Booths will offer food, plants, crafts, face painting, homemade baked goods, jams and jellies, and luminaries for both Navarro and Freestone Relays. There will also be a quilt drawing. A table will be set up to entertain the kids. The Carter Bloodmobile will be on site.



March 28

Barry Masonic Lodge will have a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. All Masons are invited.



The Main Street Advisory Board will hold a community-wide strategic planning workshop from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 227 N. Beaton St., Corsicana. Debra Farst, coordinator of the Texas Main Street Program, will facilitate the discussions. All those interested in the economic revitalization and historic preservation of the downtown district are encouraged to participate in defining the direction of the Main Street Program for the coming year. Freedom Flag Fundraiser event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bunert Park East MLK Blvd. Bring out a lawn chair for a large car show, and music all day. Vendors are needed for this event and booth space is $25. There will be food, caps, t-shirts, crafts, balloons, etc. A children’s face painter is needed. All vendors are welcome. American Legion Post 22 Sons of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, located at 632 N. Beaton St., Corsicana, will have meetings as scheduled. Derrick Day’s Crawfish Classic will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shotgun starts for the Two-Man Scramble Golf Tournament at Oak Trail Golf Course. The cost is $70 per player, which includes ticket to crawfish boil at 7 p.m. at VG’s Event Pavilion, located at 301 E. Third Ave. The boil will feature live zydeco music and all-you-can-eat crawfish, sausage, and sides for $25. All proceeds will benefit the operating fund for the Derrick Days 2011 Festival. Corsicana Brick Street Farmers Market is a member of the Texas Certified Farmers Market Corporation (TCFMC). Each year TCFMC awards one $1500 Marvin George Jr. Memorial Scholarship to a graduating senior or current college student with the intentions of pursuing a degree in an agricultural field. The Navarro County Republican Party will host a fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. at the Cook Center. The guest speaker will be Texas Railroad Commissioner and U.S. Senator candidate Elizabeth Ames Jones, along with U.S. Congressman Joe Barton and State Senator Brian Birdwell.



The Corsicana “Y” and VOICE will be partnering to offer “Healthy Kids Day” at the IOOF Park, located between 45th St. and Hwy. 22, in Corsicana, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The program will offer a focus on healthy children and families while providing fun and activities. This event is free to all children and families, and will feature bounce houses, free hot dogs, t-shirts, giveaways, and family fun. Corsicana Police Officer’s Association and co-sponsor will be hosting its Third Annual Johnnie N. Derden Memorial Golf Tournament, Four Man Florida Scramble at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Oak Trail Golf Course. Tee times are on a first come first serve basis. A combined handicap for each team must be 40 or over. The entry fee is $55 per player, which will include lunch from noon to 1 p.m. Registration for the tournament must be made by April 11.     On Saturday, a large group of women gathered at the IOOF Special Event Center, and they ranged in age from late 20s to mid-40s. Their common denominator?
    All had played softball under the coaching and tutelage of Don Woodcock at a point in their lives.

    As of Monday afternoon, 1,452 people had cast ballots in the county, state and national primary elections going on now in the basement of the Navarro County Courthouse, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.
    Early voting hours are 8 to 5 p.m. for the rest of the week, ending at 5 p.m. Friday. Election day is May 29.
