Feb. 2

Kerens Friends of Youth will hold its dinner/auction fundraiser at the KESA Building in downtown Kerens. Silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m., with meal starting at 6 p.m. Live auction will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $10 each, children age 5 to 18 are $5, and kids 4 and under are free. All proceeds go to the Kerens Friends of Youth for Navarro County Youth Expo projects.



The American Legion Post 22 at 632 N. Beaton St. will hold its regular meeting at the Post at 1:30 p.m. All members are urged to attend and participate in the business discussions.



Feb. 4

The City Of Blooming Grove will hold its Monthly City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Blooming Grove City Hall, 200 S. Fordyce, Blooming Grove.

Navarro County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance meets at 6 p.m. each Tuesday, in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St., Corsicana.  All are welcome to learn to give and receive support at the weekly meetings. On the first Tuesday of the month, Dr. Tom Sheriff, licensed psychologist, joins the group discussions on various aspects of mental health. Feb. 6

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle physician lecture will be held at noon in the hospital classrooms, featuring Zachary Drain, MD, Navarro Regional Hospital ER, will present an in-service on chest pain, including what to expect when you come you come to the ER with chest pain. The Furnishings  Committee, headed by Donna Ingram, with Cecelia Alexander, Shirley Barnes, Kathryn Corley,Linda Fannin, Carolyn French, Corinne Lee, Jan Moore, Edna Richardson, Ruth Scott, Jo Skews, and Carlene Woolf will have their program at Kinsloe House at noon. Members who attend will enjoy a presentation by Lt. Ken Authier, with the Texas DPS. Lt. Authier is a very interesting speaker. His presentation will be on Personal Safety. He always presents his information in such a way that it relates to all of us. Feb. 7

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle presents an AARP Drivers Safety Course from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital classrooms. It is a one day Driver Safety Program refresher course designed for drivers 50 years of age and older, but is open to anyone. The cost of the course is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle “Pot Luck” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the hospital classrooms. Bring a covered dish of your choice and join in on the fun. Feb. 9

Angels of Corsicana Troop Support will be holding an Angel Packing at 9 a.m. in the Angel Room at 1020 North Business 45. All ages are welcome. Please bring the name of a military member serving in harm’s way with you to the packing so we can do a gift box for our military members. These will be the Valentine’s boxes. Big C Jamboree will be at 7 p.m. at Martin’s Music Hall, 201 S. Beaton, with special guests Jenny Burnett and Lou Rochelle. Feb. 10

Bobcat Bistro will be held at the Kerens Ex-Students Association building in Downtown Kerens from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This fundraiser helps KESA fund scholarships for Kerens students.  On the menu is chicken enchiladas or Mexican beef casserole, and Spanish rice, pinto beans and Mexican salad. Dessert is choice of Sopapilla Cake or “Can’t Live Without It” Cake. All served with chips, salsa, queso, pico de gallo, and tea or water. Adult meals are $9 per person.



Feb. 11

The Republican Party of Navarro County is holding its Reagan Day Dinner at 6 p.m. at Napoli’s Restaurant at 111 East Collin Street in Corsicana. Guest speaker for the event will be Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. The public is invited to attend. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 West 7th Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug, 5,1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.

Collins Middle School Eighth Grade Washington D.C. Trip will hold a Vendor Event Fundraiser at the Collins Middle School cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ( trip isJune 11-14th). There are 25 vendors committed thus far, and there will be a bake sale and Barbecue plate lunches as well. Proceeds from sales will go toward the cost of the trip.

Spotter training on SKYWARN, the system for recognizing and alerting the public to bad and dangerous weather, including tornadoes, will take place at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theater. Registration is not necessary, and the training session is free.

Navarro County Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance meets at 6 p.m. each Tuesday, in the fellowship hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St., Corsicana.  All are welcome to learn to give and receive support at the weekly meetings. On the first Tuesday of the month, Dr. Tom Sheriff, licensed psychologist, joins the group discussions on various aspects of mental health.     The Corsicana City Council granted tax abatements to Guardian Industries and the proposed water park when the group met in regular session Tuesday. Both companies will be given 50 percent abatements for 10 years, and both are proposing sizable investments and the creation of dozens of new jobs.

    The loss of $2,900 from the Kerens Volunteer Fire Department in May has led to the arrest of the group’s treasurer, Kaell Mullen.
    Mullen has been charged with theft of more than $1,500 and less than $20,000 by a public servant, a third-degree felony.

  • Workshops to be held to review restoration bids

    There are three contractor proposals to consider for the proposed restoration of the Navarro County Courthouse, but a decision on the next step in the project is still likely a few weeks away.
    Commissioners opened the proposals for the restoration project shortly after the 2 p.m. deadline Tuesday, along with proposals for asbestos abatement in conjunction with the project.
