Corsicana —
A house fire that broke out Friday around noon at a home on the Roane Road, almost directly across the street from the Petty’s Chapel Baptist Church, roared out of control, consuming the small frame structure in less than an hour.
Fire investigators weren’t sure what caused the fire a few miles outside the Corsicana city limits as of Friday afternoon.
Pets that had been inside the house when the fire started died, but no people were home at the time.
The first engines on the scene came from Corsicana, but were soon followed by volunteer fire crews from Roane, Powell, Rice and Chatfield.
Hindering the struggle was a lack of a water source. Corsicana crews shuttled water from across the interstate, where the nearest hydrant was located, until Powell’s water source truck showed up with a ready supply.
By then, however, flames were leaping 40 feet into the sky, sending clouds of black smoke into a chilly wind.
Navarro County Sheriff’s deputies helped provide traffic control in the area.
The house was a complete loss, according to Capt. Darrell Cobb of the Corsicana Fire Department.
