Corsicana —
The Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote Monday on a bond package that could appear on the May 11 ballot.
The board is scheduled to meet beginning at 6 p.m. Monday in the School Administration building at 601 North 13th Street.
Two proposals are being considered by the district — one that includes the addition of 16 new classrooms on the high school campus, and a second that doesn’t expand the high school. Both proposals include significant upgrades district-wide in both facilities and technology.
A new campus to serve either 5th-6th grades or 7th-8th grades is the largest part of the proposals. Administration officials are expected to submit their final request for the bond issue to trustees at the board’s regular meeting.
The two proposals — which would cost either $46 million without the high school addition, or $52 million including the new high school classrooms — would include an increase in the INS, or debt service tax rate. According to figures released by the district, the owner of a home valued at $100,000 would see an increase of either $9.12 a month ($109.42 annually) for the $46 million proposal, or $11.27 a month ($135.20 annually) for the larger bond issue. Savings from the re-funding of two existing bond issues this year helped lower the cost of the proposals being studied, said Dr. Diane Frost. The district saved approximately $7 million on the two re-fundings, one in January, the second in February.
In addition to a new campus, security improvements are proposed for all campuses; significant upgrades to physical facilities to include the elimination of the 19 portable buildings now in use; the addition of 10 new busses; improvements to the library facilities at each campus; a $2.5 million renovation of the Corsicana High School baseball field; new band uniforms and instruments; and the conversion of the existing Drane Intermediate School to the new home for the district’s administrative offices.
Should the board give its approval Monday to the bond proposal, it is expected to appear on the May 11 municipal and school elections ballot.
Also on the CISD Board agenda Monday:
• Closed sessions to consult with an attorney, discuss personnel matters, and real estate.
• Presentation of “C” Awards for the month.
• Report on initial planning for enhancing the dual credit program.
• Preliminary comparisons on the STAAR/EOC state tests.
• Call for trustee election on May 11.
• Consent agenda, including accepting several donations, financial reports, meeting minutes, and personnel recommendations, including the extension and/or renewal of contracts of administrative staff.
• Action on any items discussed in closed session, if needed.
An audience for guests is scheduled for the beginning of the trustees meeting for members of the public who wish to address the board.
