Corsicana —
Navarro County had two contested constable races in the Tuesday primary election — Precinct 3 and 4 saw both incumbents win their party nominations.
Precinct 3’s Brad Butler and Precinct 4’s Tommy Grant both easily won their races in the GOP primary. With no Democratic candidates, their election in November is all but certain.
Butler was opposed by political newcomer Nicole McMahan. He was pleased with the results of his re-election bid, taking the election by a vote total of 601 to 386.
“I’m excited about it. I really appreciate the voters out there and look forward to serving another four years,” he said Tuesday.
Butler said he wouldn’t begin to guess why voters went the way they did in the election, and said he’d be taking his political future “four years at a time.”
McMahan said she was glad the race had finally come to an end.
“It was the longest primary anybody had ever seen,” she said, referring to the delay from March 2 to May 29. “It was quite an experience.”
McMahan said she perhaps should have campaigned a little differently, and may do so someday.
“I want to see Precinct 3 have a constable that’s willing to step up and do what needs to be done,” she said. “Our judge doesn’t even know who the constable is ... there are serious issues I guess the voters are not aware of.”
Still, she said, “the people spoke.
“I hope Brad steps up to the plate,” she added.
Precinct 4’s Grant, who will be unopposed in November with no Democrat seeking the post in the primary, defeated a bid from first-time office seeker Ken Kirkwood. Grant took the vote, 952-773. Grant thanked his supporters Tuesday.
“Lots of support, and a lot of good help,” he said. “And, I think I’ve done a job I’ve told people I’d do, and be fair and honest with everyone.”
Grant, a longtime lawman in the county, said he enjoys doing the work of the constable.
“I enjoy visiting with people one-on-one,” he said. “I’m not much of a politician, but even the people I server papers too, they understand it has to be done and we get along.”
Grant said this four year term “will be enough ... I won’t go for another election.”
“I congratulate him on a job well done,” Kirkwood said of his race with Grant Tuesday.
Kirkwood said he’d remain with the Corsicana Police Department, where he’s been for the last 30 years.
Is another run at office in his future?
“I don’t know,” he said, “I’m not really a politician.”
Precinct 1 Constable Mike Davis, and Precinct 2’s David Foreman had no opponents in the GOP primary, and no opposition on the Democratic Primary ballot, and are bound for re-election in November along with Butler and Grant.
