Corsicana — A listing of meetings and events of interest from throughout Navarro County

Aug. 20

The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. at Republican headquarters located at 111-B W. Third Ave. in downtown Corsicana. Precinct Chairs will be sworn in for the next two-year term and local party By-Laws will be adopted. Special guest speaker State Representative Byron Cook will prepare the local party for the 2012 general election in November. Please join us for a social from 6:30 to 7 p.m. saluting our elected officials, hosted by the Navarro County Republican women. All registered voters are welcome to attend. Corsicana Art League will meet Monday, Aug 20 at 6 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center. The program, presented by Barbara Jones and Deb Miller, will encourage artists to used the computer more effectively by showing how to use photoshop to crop or resize an image.  Also, they will discuss the use of Social Media such as Facebook. Aug. 21

The Shakers and Scrapers Car Club will hold their monthly meeting at VG'z Event Pavillion (301 E 3rd Ave ) at 6:30 p.m. Shakers and Scrapers is a very diverse group of folks with a common interest of cars and a desire to help local charities and events.  We hold an annual car show during Derrick Days which helps to support a local charity.  If you are interested in seeing if we are a club that you might like to join, please come and attend our meeting.  For information call Sean at (903) 851-7845

Kinsloe House and the Volunteer Committee will host an interesting program 12 noon with a group of dancers giving members a presentation on dance fitness. There will be three members of “Shall We Dance” to present the program. The Volunteer committee consists of Clara Hickerson, chairperson with members of the Board of Directors of Kinsloe House helping her. These dance routines will show the members how we can still be fit when we get older. Please make your reservations by Monday, Aug. 20. Cancellations must be made by 12 noon on Aug. 20.



Aug. 23

When Are We Going Home Ministry and the Spirit Sent Music Ministry will meet at New Beginnings Fellowship in Blooming Grove at 6 p.m.



The Corsicana Newcomer's Club will meet at the Kinsloe House at 11 a.m. for socials followed by lunch and our fabulous annual Fashion Show.  Come to meet new friends and see all the latest in Fall Fashions.  Call Marge Oslick at (903) 872-3508 for more information and reservations.

Aug. 24

Navarro Regional Hospital’s Senior Circle will have a Lunch and Learn session at 12 noon, called “Cooking with Herbs and Spices.” Paula Butler, Texas AgriLife extension agent, will show the est way to utilize herbs and spices on vegetables. This class is free, and will be held in the hospital classrooms. Please call (903) 654-6892 to make reservations.



Aug. 25

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Team from Corsicana Bedding Inc. will hold a Fish Fry at the Chatfield Community Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to participate in this worthy cause and eat some great fish!



Gospel Jubilee will be held at Martins Music Hall, 102 S. Beaton. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with show starting at 7 p.m. Featured artists will be Grace Community Praise Team, Billy Elias, Carolyn Cobb, and Heavenly Highways Band (which consists of Elias Lowe, Gary Poe and Ricky Woodall). Admission is $10 per person.



The VFW Post 3366 is hosting a dance in the ballroom. Heart of Texas Road Gang will play from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. There will be no cover charge but donations will be accepted to help pay the cost of the band. Come out and bring your friends! Good country music for your listening or dancing pleasure!

 

Aug. 27

The Silver Dems, a newly organized group will meet at 5 p.m. at the Navarro Democratic Party Headquarters at 416A W. Third St. (one block West of Courthouse).  We will be socializing and munching from plates that you bring so be generous with the fried chicken or sweet treats and wear your best smile.  We will be electing officers and committies so your leadership skills will be needed.  The group’s main purpose is to discuss issues important to folks over 50 years young and educate ourselves on benefits from the government and civilian organizations that are available to senior citizens and veterans.



Aug. 28

Pearce Civil War and Western Art Museum at Navarro College will hold a volunteer meeting at 10 a.m. for anyone interested in reading Civil War letters to search for key terms. This indexing project may be done at home. Also, the meeting is for anyone interested in volunteering to give tours of students and adults. Sept. 5

Sept. 8

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day Team from Corsicana Bedding Inc. will hold a benefit concert at The Remington featuring the Sloane McCain Band from 8 p.m. to 12 midnight. Tickets are $10 at the door, and there will also be a silent auction. All funds raised will go toward the team’s fundraising efforts.



Sept. 9

Journey to Freedom, a Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University series will take place starting today at Grace Community Church. It will meet each Monday at 7 p.m. Sign-up by contacting Jason at (903) 874-7300 or visit welcometograce.org. Cost is $89. A payment plan is available.



Sept. 11

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009 will meet at 7 p.m. at the Sirloin Stockade, 2508 W. Seventh Ave, Corsicana. Membership is open to U.S. armed forces veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28,1961 and May 7,1975, or in ANY duty location between Aug. 5, 1964 and May 7,1975. The veteran must submit a copy of his/her DD Form 214 along with the application and dues. Members and guest are invited to come early and eat and visit prior to the meeting.



The Corsicana Emergency Corps., located at 416 South 12th Street in Corsicana, will hold its regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7 p.m.   The general public is invited to attend.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.  For further information, please call (903) 872-5072.



Sept. 13

When Are We Going Home Ministry and Rising Star Creative Ministry will meet at New Beginnings Fellowship in Blooming Grove at 6 p.m.



The Young at Heart Club will resume meeting after its summer break from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Blooming Grove Museum on Fordyce St. This is for anyone 55 and up. Come and enjoy fellowship, fun and friends. Refreshments will be served. The Young at Heart Club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, at the museum.



VOICE will have a Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours at 5:32 to 7:02 p.m.  The new VOICE logo will be unveiled and there will be time for food, fellowship, and door prizes.  The Business After Hours will be at the VOICE Office at the Bank of America Building, 100 N Main St Suite 308 in Corsicana.  September 13 will also be a great time to donate to VOICE through Donor Bridge, every donation of $25 or above made 7 a.m. to Midnight will be matched by a percentage to be determined by the amount of donations received.  Those wishing to contribute can logo on to www.donorbridgetx.org and look up VOICE on September 13 between 7a.m. to Midnight. She ran unopposed for the position, along with Municipal Judge Mike Russell.

    The renovation of the Corsicana Police Department got a bit more involved than it was originally intended to. An error with some concrete resulted in water flooding city hall, and forcing replacement of carpeting and flooring. As well, the renovations quickly led to renovations of the municipal court, as well.
