Two Dawson residents were arrested Friday after dumping a dog on a rural gravel road east of Dawson.
Deputy Ricky Reagan was patrolling in the area when he came up on a pickup stopped in the middle of the road with a small black dog standing next to it. When the pickup started up again, the dog tried chasing the truck.
Noticing a cage in the back of the pickup, Reagan stopped the truck and questioned the passenger and driver, who admitted abandoning the dog on the road.
“They were in the middle of no where and the dog was hot on the trail of the vehicle,” Reagan said. “It was suspicious to me.”
The driver, Ervin Lee Sullivan, 64, and Virginia Barron, 63, were arrested and charged with Cruelty to a Non-Livestock Animal, a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $4,000, and up to one year in jail. Justice of the Peace Jackie Freeland set bonds of $2,000 on Sullivan and $1,500 on Barron. Both individuals have bonded out of jail, Freeland said Monday.
The truck was impounded and towed.
Dumping unwanted pets in rural areas is an on-going problem, said Chief Deputy Mike Cox with the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office.
“...Turning a dog or cat loose in the country is merely condemning them to a slow death from starvation, becoming the meal of a predator or forcing a rancher to destroy them when they attack his livestock,” Cox stated. “Cruelty to any animal in Navarro County is not and will not be tolerated by the Sheriff’s Office.”
The dog dumpers were arrested, but the dog remains at large, Reagan said.
“We were probably out there 45 minutes or better trying to catch the dog. It took off into the brush and we looked and looked and still couldn’t find it,” Reagan said.
